Claims (31)

1 . A cutting device, comprising:

a housing;

a blade carrier retained within the housing and configured to retain a cutting blade, wherein the blade carrier is at least partially removable from a first opening formed in a first portion of the housing;

a blade carrier ejector spring configured to bias the blade carrier out of the housing;

a movable blade guard at least partially disposed within the housing and configured to slide into a second opening formed in a second portion of the housing, wherein the blade guard is configured to slide between an extended position where the blade is entirely covered by the movable blade guard and a retracted position where at least a portion of the blade extends beyond the movable blade guard; and

a blade channel formed in the movable blade guard, wherein the blade channel aligns with the blade carrier such that the blade passes through the blade channel to expose the portion of the blade as the movable blade guard moves toward the retracted position.

2 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the blade carrier ejector spring is disposed along a track of the blade carrier.

3 . The cutting device of claim 2 , further comprising a spring block having a first portion that engages with the blade carrier ejector spring and a second portion that abuts with the blade carrier.

4 . The cutting device of claim 1 , further comprising a blade carrier lock movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein the blade carrier lock is slidably received adjacent to the first portion of the housing and is configured to reversibly engage with an outer edge of the blade carrier to secure the blade carrier within the first opening.

5 . The cutting device of claim 4 , wherein the outer edge of the blade carrier is formed with a notch that receives a first end of the blade carrier lock.

6 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the movable blade guard includes an inner portion that slides on a blade guard track formed on an inner portion of the housing.

7 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the movable blade guard includes an outer portion that is outside of the housing when the blade guard is in the extended position and inside of the housing when the blade guard is in the retracted position.

8 . The cutting device of claim 1 , further comprising a blade guard switch, wherein the blade guard switch is formed with a connector post that selectively engages with a portion of the blade guard to regulate movement of the blade guard between the retracted position and the extended position.

9 . A cutting device, comprising:

a housing;

a blade carrier retained within the housing and configured to retain a cutting blade, wherein the blade carrier is at least partially removable from a first opening formed in a first portion of the housing;

a movable blade guard at least partially disposed within the housing and configured to slide into a second opening formed in a second portion of the housing, wherein the blade guard is configured to slide between an extended position where the blade is entirely covered by the movable blade guard and a retracted position where at least a portion of the blade extends beyond the movable blade guard;

a blade carrier ejector spring configured to bias the blade carrier out of the housing, wherein the blade carrier ejector spring is disposed along a track of the blade carrier; and

a blade channel formed in the movable blade guard, wherein the blade channel aligns with the blade carrier such that the blade passes through the blade channel to expose the portion of the blade as the movable blade guard moves toward the retracted position.

10 . The cutting device of claim 9 , further comprising a spring block having a first portion that engages with the blade carrier ejector spring and a second portion that abuts with the blade carrier.

11 . The cutting device of claim 9 , further comprising a blade carrier lock movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein the blade carrier lock is slidably received adjacent to the first portion of the housing and is configured to reversibly engage with an outer edge of the blade carrier to secure the blade carrier within the first opening.

12 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the outer edge of the blade carrier is formed with a notch that receives a first end of the blade carrier lock.

13 . A cutting device, comprising:

a housing;

a blade carrier retained within the housing and configured to retain a cutting blade, wherein the blade carrier is at least partially removable from a first opening formed in a first portion of the housing;

a blade carrier lock movable between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein the blade carrier lock is slidably received adjacent to the first portion of the housing and is configured to reversibly engage with an outer edge of the blade carrier to secure the blade carrier within the first opening;

a movable blade guard at least partially disposed within the housing and configured to slide into a second opening formed in a second portion of the housing, wherein the blade guard is configured to slide between an extended position where the blade is entirely covered by the movable blade guard and a retracted position where at least a portion of the blade extends beyond the movable blade guard; and

a blade channel formed in the movable blade guard, wherein the blade channel aligns with the blade carrier such that the blade passes through the blade channel to expose the portion of the blade as the movable blade guard moves toward the retracted position.

14 . The cutting device of claim 13 , wherein the outer edge of the blade carrier is formed with a notch that receives a first end of the blade carrier lock.

15 . The cutting device of claim 13 , further comprising a blade carrier ejector spring configured to bias the blade carrier out of the housing, wherein the blade carrier ejector spring is disposed along a track of the blade carrier.

16 . The cutting device of claim 15 , further comprising a spring block having a first portion that engages with the blade carrier ejector spring and a second portion that abuts with the blade carrier.
