Abstract

A method of inferring user intent in search input in a conversational interaction system is disclosed. A method of inferring user intent in a search input includes providing a user preference signature that describes preferences of the user, receiving search input from the user intended by the user to identify at least one desired item, and determining that a portion of the search input contains an ambiguous identifier. The ambiguous identifier is intended by the user to identify, at least in part, a desired item. The method further includes inferring a meaning for the ambiguous identifier based on matching portions of the search input to the preferences of the user described by the user preference signature and selecting items from a set of content items based on comparing the search input and the inferred meaning of the ambiguous identifier with metadata associated with the content items.

Claims (51)

1 - 29 . (canceled)

30 . A method comprising:

receiving a first user input;

determining that the first user input relates to a first content item of a plurality of content items;

providing, at a user device, a first response based at least in part on the first user input;

receiving a second user input;

determining that the second user input is related to the first user input and a second content item of the plurality of content items; and

based on the determining, providing, at the user device, a second response based at least in part on the first user input, the second user input, and the second content item.

31 . The method of claim 30 , wherein the determining that the second user input is related to the first user input is based on determining that a first portion of the first user input corresponds to a second portion of the second user input.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein at least one of the first portion or the second portion comprises at least one of a pronoun, a syntactic expletive, a noun, or a named entity.

33 . The method of claim 30 , wherein determining that the second user input is related to the first user input further comprises:

identifying a first portion of the first user input and a second portion of the second user input; and

determining that the second portion of the second user input links the first portion of the first user input with at least a portion of the first response.

34 . The method of claim 30 , wherein determining that the second user input is related to the first user input further comprises:

inferring a first intent associated with the first user input;

inferring a second intent associated with the second user input; and

determining that the first intent corresponds to the second intent.

35 . The method of claim 34 , wherein determining that the second user input is related to the first user input further comprises:

determining a relevance score between a first portion of the first user input and a second portion of the second user input based at least in part on at least one of the first intent and the second intent; and

determining that the relevance score is above a threshold value.

36 . The method of claim 34 , wherein inferring the first intent associated with the first user input is based at least in part on at least one of an entity or attribute of the first user input.

37 . The method of claim 34 , wherein inferring the second intent associated with the second user input is based at least in part on at least one of an entity of the second user input, an attribute of the second user input, the first intent, an entity of the first user input, an attribute of the first user input, or the first response.

38 . The method of claim 34 , wherein providing the second response is further based at least in part on one of the first intent or second intent.

39 . The method of claim 30 , wherein the providing the second response is further based at least in part on the first response.

40 . A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

receive a first user input;

control circuitry configured to:

determine that the first user input relates to a first content item of a plurality of content items;

provide, at a user device, a first response based at least in part on the first user input;

wherein the input/output circuitry is further configured to:

receive a second user input; and

wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine that the second user input is related to the first user input and a second content item of the plurality of content items; and

based on the determining, provide, at the user device, a second response based at least in part on the first user input, the second user input, and the second content item.

41 . The system of claim 40 , wherein the determining that the second user input is related to the first user input is based on determining that a first portion of the first user input corresponds to a second portion of the second user input.

42 . The system of claim 41 , wherein at least one of the first portion or the second portion comprises at least one of a pronoun, a syntactic expletive, a noun, or a named entity.

43 . The system of claim 40 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine that the second user input is related to the first user input is further configured to:

identify a first portion of the first user input and a second portion of the second user input; and

determine that the second portion of the second user input links the first portion of the first user input with at least a portion of the first response.

44 . The system of claim 40 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine that the second user input is related to the first user input is further configured to:

infer a first intent associated with the first user input;

infer a second intent associated with the second user input; and

determine that the first intent corresponds to the second intent.

45 . The system of claim 44 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine that the second user input is related to the first user input is further configured to:

determine a relevance score between a first portion of the first user input and a second portion of the second user input based at least in part on at least one of the first intent and the second intent; and

determine that the relevance score is above a threshold value.

46 . The system of claim 44 , wherein inferring the first intent associated with the first user input is based at least in part on at least one of an entity or attribute of the first user input.

47 . The system of claim 44 , wherein inferring the second intent associated with the second user input is based at least in part on at least one of an entity of the second user input, an attribute of the second user input, the first intent, an entity of the first user input, an attribute of the first user input, or the first response.

48 . The system of claim 44 , wherein providing the second response is further based at least in part on one of the first intent or second intent.

49 . The system of claim 40 , wherein the providing the second response is further based at least in part on the first response.
