Abstract

A pad is provided having a body for providing a gas seal over a surgical site, a port extending between a first surface of the body and a second surface of the body and sized accept a surgical instrument, and a lumen situated along the body and having a first opening and a second opening, the second opening aligned with the surgical site for communicating a fluid flow to the surgical site.

Claims (26)

1 . An apparatus comprising:

a body sufficiently flexible for conforming to a surface about a surgical site to provide a fluid-tight seal thereabout, the body having a bottom surface extending across the body;

a lumen extending from an edge of the body inward and designed to flex along with the body while maintaining a pathway for fluid to flow therethrough; and

a port positioned adjacent a distal end of the lumen and extending between a top surface of the body and the bottom surface of the body, the port sized to provide a fluid-tight seal when a surgical instrument extends thereacross.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising one of a flap, septum, a one-way valve, or combinations thereof for sealing the port.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a tube extending from the distal end of the lumen toward the surgical site to enhance delivery of the fluid flow to the surgical site.

4 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the tube extends through the lumen.

5 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the tube forms a fluid-tight seal with the lumen.

6 . The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the tube is coupled to a fitting proximate to the lumen.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a tab extending from the body to provide a finger grip to facilitate removal of the body.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive disposed over at least a portion of the bottom surface of the body to aid in forming the fluid-tight seal over the surgical site.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the body includes an adhesive-free zone surrounding the port to permit local lateral displacement of the body.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the port is sized to form a fluid-tight seal with the surgical instrument.

11 . An apparatus comprising:

a body sufficiently flexible for conforming to a surface about a surgical site to provide a fluid-tight seal thereabout, the body having a bottom surface extending across the body;

a lumen radially extending along the body and designed to flex along with the body while maintaining a pathway for fluid flow therethrough; and

a port extending between a top surface of the body and the bottom surface of the body, the port sized to provide a fluid-tight seal when a surgical instrument extends thereacross.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising one of a flap, septum, a one-way valve, or combinations thereof for sealing the port.

13 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a tube extending from a distal end of the lumen toward the surgical site to enhance delivery of the fluid flow to the surgical site.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the tube extends through the lumen.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the tube forms a fluid tight seal with the lumen.

16 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the tube is coupled to a fitting proximate to the lumen.

17 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a tab extending from the body to provide a finger grip to facilitate removal of the body.

18 . The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising an adhesive disposed over at least a portion of the bottom surface of the body to aid in forming the fluid-tight seal over the surgical site.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the body includes an adhesive-free zone surrounding the port to permit local lateral movement of the body.

20 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the port is sized to form a fluid-tight seal with the surgical instrument.
