Abstract

In one aspect, an apparatus is provided for a conveyor belt system. The apparatus includes a conveyor belt cleaner having an elongate support and a pair of mounts configured to position the elongate support to extend across a conveyor belt. The apparatus includes a cleaner blade configured to be operatively mounted to the elongate support and engage a conveyor belt. The apparatus further includes a sensor configured to detect at least one characteristic of the elongate support as the elongate support vibrates during conveyor belt operation. A processor of the apparatus is configured to use the at least one characteristic of the elongate support to predict at least one property of the cleaner blade.

Claims (45)

1 . A resilient mount for a conveyor belt cleaner of a conveyor belt system, the conveyor belt cleaner having an elongate support having a longitudinal axis, the resilient mount comprising:

a force application member configured to be fixed to the elongate support of the conveyor belt cleaner and move with the elongate support, the force application member having an arm configured so that when the force application member is fixed to the elongate support, the arm thereof projects away from the elongate support transverse to the longitudinal axis thereof;

a spring arranged to cause the arm to receive a bias force from the spring to resiliently bias the force application member for causing a cleaner blade mounted to the elongate support to resiliently engage a conveyor belt of the conveyor belt system; and

a sensor operatively connected to the force application member and configured to detect positions of the elongate support as the elongate support and force application member fixed thereto move during operation of the conveyor belt system.

2 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of the sensor is configured to move upon movement of the force application member.

3 . The resilient mount of claim 2 wherein the sensor is configured to detect the position of the elongate support based at least in part upon the position of at least the portion of the sensor.

4 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the force application member comprises a collar having an opening to receive the elongate support with the arm extending from the collar.

5 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the force application member comprises at least one fastener that is rotatable to fix the force application member to the elongate support.

6 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the spring is a helical spring having coils of the spring extending around a central opening of the helical spring; and

an elongate member extending in the central opening of the helical spring, the elongate member including a magnet.

7 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the spring is a helical spring having coils of the spring extending around a central opening of the helical spring; and

an elongate member extending in the central opening of the helical spring.

8 . The resilient mount of claim 7 further comprising a nut engaged with threads of the elongate member, the nut rotatable to adjust a preload of the helical spring.

9 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the arm of the force application member comprises a torsion arm for pivoting the elongate support.

10 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the force application member comprises a circular opening to receive the elongate support; and

wherein the arm of the force application member extends radially from the elongate support and toward the spring with the elongate support received in the circular opening.

11 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the spring is a helical spring.

12 . The resilient mount of claim 1 in combination with a processor operatively connected to the sensor, the processor configured to predict at least one property of the conveyor belt system.

13 . The resilient mount of claim 12 wherein the at least one property of the conveyer belt system includes a remaining lifespan of the cleaner blade.

14 . The resilient mount of claim 1 in combination with a processor operatively connected to the sensor, the processor configured to determine a fault condition based at least in part upon at least one of the positions of the elongate support.

15 . The resilient mount of claim 1 wherein the sensor comprises a magnetometer.

16 . An apparatus for a conveyor belt system, the apparatus comprising:

an elongate support to receive a cleaning blade;

spring tensioners to orient the elongate support to extend across a conveyor belt and keep the cleaning blade engaged with a conveyor belt of the conveyor belt system, the spring tensioners configured to resiliently deflect and permit movement of the elongate support during operation of the conveyor belt system;

a sensor of one of the spring tensioners configured to detect a characteristic of the one spring tensioner; and

a processor configured to use the characteristic of the spring tensioner to predict a property of the conveyor belt system.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the characteristic of the spring tensioner comprises a position of a portion of the one spring tensioner.

18 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the sensor has at least a portion thereof to be operatively connected to the elongate support and move in response to movement of the elongate support during operation of the conveyor belt system; and

wherein the sensor is configured to detect the characteristic of the one spring tensioner based at least in part upon the position of at least the portion of the sensor.

19 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the characteristic comprises a position of a portion of the one spring tensioner; and

wherein the property of the conveyor belt system comprises a component failure.

20 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the one spring tensioner includes a helical spring having coils extending around a central opening of the helical spring; and

an elongate member extending in the central opening of the helical spring, the elongate member including a magnet.

21 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the one spring tensioner includes a helical spring having coils extending around a central opening of the helical spring;

an elongate member extending in the central opening of the helical spring; and

a nut engaged with threads of the elongate member, the nut rotatable to adjust a preload of the helical spring.

22 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the one spring tensioner comprises:

a force application member having an arm for extending from the elongate support transverse to a length of the elongate support; and

a spring arranged to cause the arm to receive a bias force from the spring to resiliently bias the force application member for causing the cleaning blade to resiliently engage the conveyor belt.

23 . The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the force application member comprises at least one fastener that is rotatable to secure the force application member to the elongate support.

24 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the elongate support has opposite end portions and an axis extending therebetween;

wherein the one of the spring tensioners has a mount for securing the spring tensioner to a frame structure of the conveyor belt system; and

wherein the sensor is axially outward of the mount with the conveyor belt being axially inward of the mount.

25 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the sensor comprises a magnetometer.

26 . The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the property of the conveyor belt system comprises a remaining lifespan of the cleaning blade.
