BATTERY WITH COMPRESSION AND PREVENTION OF THERMAL RUNAWAY PROPAGATION FEATURES
A battery includes a metal can having a bottom, a top opening, and four sides. The battery also includes a plurality of cells stacked inside the metal can, wherein at least two opposing sides of the four sides of the metal can are biased inward against the plurality of cells to provide compression.
1 . (canceled)
2 . A method for manufacturing a battery, the method comprising:
providing a metal can;
stacking a plurality of cells, a plurality of insulation layers and a plurality of thermal conductors into a stack according to a stacking pattern of an insulation layer, a thermal conductor and a cell, wherein the plurality of thermal conductors have a plurality of single-sided fins;
providing the stack in the metal can; and
positioning the plurality of thermal conductors within the metal can to alternate an orientation of the plurality of single-sided fins so that one fin touches a first interior side of the metal can and a subsequent fin touches an opposite interior side of the metal can,
wherein the plurality of cells has side compression on at least one side of the cell, wherein the side compression is made of a flexible material that is different than a material of the single-sided fins.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the side compression is provided only on a first side opposite to a second side where a fin is provided.
4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
manufacturing the metal can using one or more of impact extrusion or deep drawing.
5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of insulation layers includes aerogel.
6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of cells includes a pouch cell.
7 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
forming a first vent hole and a second vent hole on a first side of the metal can, wherein the first vent hole is on a first side of a vertical axis which runs through the first side of the metal can and the second vent hole is on a second side of the vertical axis, wherein if the first vent hole were rotated about the vertical axis to produce a rotated first vent hole, the rotated first vent hole would not overlap with the second vent hole.
8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising:
covering first vent hole and the second vent hole by tape.
9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the metal can is a first metal can, the method further comprising:
forming a first vent hole on a first side of the first metal can;
providing a second battery including a second metal can;
forming a second vent hole on a second side of the second metal can, wherein the bottom of the first vent hole is higher than the top of the second vent hole; and
when the first metal can and the second metal can are placed next to each other with the first side facing the second side, the first vent hole and the second vent hole do not overlap.
10 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
applying a fire retardant substance to one or more of the following: an underside of a lid, insulation, a side of a fin not adjacent to one of the plurality of cells, or a side of one of the plurality of cells adjacent to insulation.
11 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
applying a fire retardant substance to one side of the fin facing an insulation layer; and the fire retardant substance is not applied to another side of the fin facing a cell.
12 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
providing a lid for the metal can, wherein an underside of the lid faces the plurality of cells; and
filling a void space between the underside of the lid and the plurality of cells with expanding fire retardant foam.
13 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
forming at least one vent hold on each one of four sides of the metal can.
14 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
forming a first vent and a second vent on a same half of the battery as a negative terminal, wherein a bottom of the first vent is higher than the top of the second vent, wherein the can further includes a third vent and a fourth vent on a same half of the battery as a positive terminal, wherein the third vent is at a same height as the first vent, the fourth vent is at a same height as the second vent.

forming the stack inside the metal can.
16 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
compressing at least two sides of the metal can with the stack therein.
17 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
providing at least two layers of insulation layer at least at a top of the stack or a bottom of the stack.
18 . The method of claim 2 , wherein a fin of a thermal conductor is sandwiched between an interior of the metal can and the cell adjacent to the thermal conductor with the fin.
19 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the metal can includes 1000 series aluminum.
