Abstract

An axial flow element for use in a liquid separation system for an internal combustion engine includes a hub, a groove, a locking member, and a flat layer. The hub includes a cylindrical outer surface. The groove is disposed in the outer surface. The groove extends in a substantially longitudinal direction along the hub from a first end of the hub to a second end of the hub. The locking member is disposed in the groove. The flat layer is disposed between the hub and the locking member.

Claims (28)

1 . An axial flow element, comprising:

a hub having an outer surface;

a flat layer heat staked to the outer surface of the hub.

2 . The axial flow element of claim 1 , wherein the outer surface of the hub has a cylindrical shape.

3 . The axial flow element of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of extension pieces extending from the outer surface of the hub, the flat layer attached to the outer surface of the hub via the plurality of extension pieces.

4 . The axial flow element of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of extension pieces comprise cylindrical posts extending from the outer surface of the hub.

5 . The axial flow element of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of extension pieces are spaced approximately evenly along the outer surface of the hub.

6 . The axial flow element of claim 3 , wherein the hub includes a recessed region defined therein, the recess including the plurality of extension pieces therein.

7 . The axial flow element of claim 3 , wherein the flat layer includes a plurality of openings defined therein, and wherein each of the plurality of extension pieces align with a respective one of the plurality of openings when the flat layer is attached to the outer surface of the hub.

8 . The axial flow element of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of openings are sized and shaped to receive the plurality of extension pieces therein.

9 . The axial flow element of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of openings are located proximate a leading edge of the flat layer.

10 . The axial flow element of claim 1 , further comprising a second layer that is affixed to the outer surface of the hub.

11 . The axial flow element of claim 10 , wherein the second layer is attached to the outer surface of the hub approximately 180 degrees from a position where the flat layer is attached to the outer surface of the hub.

12 . The axial flow element of claim 10 , wherein the second layer has different material properties from the flat layer.

13 . The axial flow element of claim 10 , wherein the second layer includes corrugations therein.

14 . The axial flow element of claim 10 , wherein the second layer is heat staked to the outer surface of the hub.

15 . A method, comprising:

positioning a flat layer along an outer surface of a hub;

applying a press tool at an elevated temperature to the hub and the flat layer, thereby heat staking the flat layer to the hub; and

winding the flat layer around the hub.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the hub is cylindrical in shape.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the press tool is brought into contact with a plurality of extension pieces extending from the outer surface of the hub, thereby deforming the plurality of extension pieces so as to heat stake the flat layer to the outer surface of the hub.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the flat layer is positioned within a recessed area along the outer surface of the hub.

19 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

positioning a second layer along an outer surface of a hub;

applying an additional press tool at an elevated temperature to the second layer and the hub, thereby heat staking the second layer to the hub; and

winding the second layer around the hub.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the press tool is brought into contact with a plurality of additional extension pieces extending from the outer surface of the hub, thereby deforming the plurality of additional extension pieces so as to heat stake the second layer to the outer surface of the hub.
