Abstract

Various embodiments of power tool and method of operating same are described. The power tool may include a first position sensor, a second position sensor, a third position sensor, and a controller. The first, second, and third position sensors may each generate a signal indicative of a distance between the respective position sensor and a workpiece. The controller may determine one or more angles of the power tool with respect to the workpiece based on the first, second, and third signal and present an indication as to whether the one or more angles are within a predetermined range. The controller may further obtain a depth measurement based on the first signal, the second signal, and the third signal and generate, based on the obtained depth measurement, one or more control signals that control operation of the power tool.

Claims (24)

1 - 18 . (canceled)

19 . A power tool, comprising:

a sensor operable to determine a current distance to a workpiece; and

a controller operable to determine a drive depth of a bit into the workpiece, wherein:

the drive depth is determined according to the current distance, and

if a difference between the current distance and a previously distance is less than or equal to a threshold, the current distance is stored as the previous distance.

20 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller indicates the drive depth by generating one or more signals that cause a haptic buzz as a predetermined depth is reached.

21 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller indicates the drive depth by generating one or more signals that cause an audible beep as a predetermined depth is reached.

22 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller indicates the drive depth by generating one or more signals that cause a visual illumination as a predetermined depth is reached.

23 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller indicates the drive depth by generating a same signal as each of a plurality of predetermined depths is reached.

24 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller is operable to generate a different signal as each of a plurality of predetermined depths is reached.

25 . The power tool of claim 19 , wherein the controller is operable to:

set a zero value, and

stop the power tool when the current distance reaches the zero value.

26 . The power tool of claim 19 , comprising:

a different sensor operable to sense a different distance.

27 . The power tool of claim 26 , wherein the controller is operable to:

determine the drive depth according to the current distance and the different distance.

28 . The power tool of claim 26 , wherein the controller is operable to:

determine an angle with respect to the workpiece according to the current distance and the different distance.

29 . The power tool of claim 28 , comprising:

a display device operable to present the angle.

30 . The power tool of claim 19 , comprising:

a display device operable to present the drive depth.
