Abstract

A sofa that transitions between a sitting position and a sleeping position includes a frame with a bracket and multiple arms and support bases that allow the frame to move from the sitting position and the sleeping position, and the reverse, by allowing the multiple arms to rotate and support bases to rotate about the bracket at attachment points where the bracket and arms are connected by fasteners. A back support portion of the sofa may be hingedly moveable into first and second positions to reduce the vertical height of the back support to allow easier transport and movement of the sofa. The sofa may have a space or notch underneath that is configured to be fastened or otherwise affixed to a platform, such as a bump out in a recreational vehicle, to provide the sofa with a lower profile.

Claims (36)

1 . A slide-out assembly for a sofa bed displaceable between a sitting position and a sleeping position, the slide-out assembly comprising:

a bracket;

a front horizontal base pivotally connected to the bracket via a back arm and a front arm;

a middle horizontal base connected to the back arm and the front arm between the front horizontal base and the bracket; and

a back horizontal base pivotally connected to the bracket,

wherein the front horizontal base, the middle horizontal base, and the back horizontal base are nested in the sitting position, and wherein at least the front horizontal base maintains an upwardly facing orientation relative to gravity when displaced between the sitting position and the sleeping position.

2 . An assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the front horizontal base, the middle horizontal base, and the back horizontal base maintain an upwardly facing orientation relative to gravity when displaced between the sitting position and the sleeping position.

3 . An assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the back horizontal base is pivotally connected to the bracket via a rear back horizontal base arm and a forward back horizontal base arm.

4 . An assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the back arm comprises a branch pivotally connected to one of the rear back horizontal base arm and the forward back horizontal base arm.

5 . An assembly according to claim 4 , wherein a proximal end of the back arm is pivotally connected to the bracket adjacent the branch.

6 . An assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the bracket comprises a pair of bracket stubs to which the rear back horizontal base arm and the forward back horizontal base arm are pivotally connected.

7 . An assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the back arm is connected to the back horizontal base such that displacement of the back arm effects displacement of the back horizontal base.

8 . An assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the bracket comprises a main horizontal bar and at least two vertical bracket stubs extending downward from the main horizontal bar, wherein the back horizontal base is pivotally connected to the vertical bracket stubs.

9 . An assembly according to claim 8 , wherein the back arm is pivotally connected to an interim section of the main horizontal bar.

10 . An assembly according to claim 9 , wherein the front arm is pivotally connected to a distal end of the main horizontal bar.

11 . An assembly according to claim 10 , wherein the middle horizontal base is connected to an interim section of the back arm and to an interim section of the front arm.

12 . An assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the middle horizontal base is connected to the interim section of the front arm via a front arm stub.

13 . A sleeper sofa comprising:

the slide-out assembly of claim 1 ;

a front cushion secured to the front horizontal base;

a middle cushion secured to the middle horizontal base; and

a back cushion secured to the back horizontal base.

14 . A sleeper sofa according to claim 13 , wherein in the sitting position, the front cushion, the middle cushion, and the back cushion are stacked, and in the sleeping position, the front cushion, the middle cushion, and the back cushion are aligned to form a flat sleeping surface.

15 . A sleeper sofa according to claim 13 , further comprising:

sofa arms that define a seating space; and

an upright back support disposed between the sofa arms.

16 . A sleeper sofa according to claim 15 , wherein the upright back support comprises a top portion and a bottom portion connected by hinges.

17 . A slide-out assembly for a sofa bed displaceable between a sitting position and a sleeping position, the slide-out assembly comprising:

a bracket;

a back arm pivotally connected to the bracket at a first pivot point;

a front arm pivotally connected to the bracket at a second pivot point, spaced from the first pivot point; and

base members coupled with the front arm and the back arm,

wherein pivoting of the back arm and the front arm relative to the bracket effects displacement of the base members between the sitting position and the sleeping position.

18 . An assembly according to claim 17 , wherein the base members comprise a front horizontal base pivotally connected to distal ends of the back arm and the front arm, a middle horizontal base pivotally connected to interim sections of the back arm and the front arm, and a back horizontal base pivotally connected to at least one of the back arm and the front arm.

19 . An assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the front horizontal base, the middle horizontal base, and the back horizontal base are nested in the sitting position, and wherein at least the front horizontal base maintains an upwardly facing orientation relative to gravity when displaced between the sitting position and the sleeping position.

20 . An assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the back horizontal base is pivotally connected to the bracket via a rear back horizontal base arm and a forward back horizontal base arm.
