Abstract

A patient specific instrument is disclosed for correcting a condition present in a patient. The patient specific instrument includes a body that includes an inferior side having a bone engagement surface shaped to match a first surface of a first bone and a second surface of a second bone of a joint. The instrument also includes a superior side having a first guide feature and a second guide feature that together, with the bone engagement surface overlying the first surface and the second surface, are positioned to guide resection of the first bone and the second bone during a surgical osteotomy for correcting the condition. The body is configured to seat transverse to the joint with the bone engagement surface engaging the first surface of the first bone and the second surface of the second bone.

Claims (39)

1 . A method for remediating a condition present in a patient's foot, the method comprising:

providing a deformity identifier of a patient's foot to an artificial intelligence module;

the artificial intelligence module determining a preliminary cutting guide model configured to correct the deformity identified by the deformity identifier; and

providing the preliminary cutting guide model configured to define a cutting guide configured to remediate a condition present in a patient's foot.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the deformity identifier identifies a bunion deformity and the method further comprises generating a cutting guide based on the preliminary cutting guide model, the cutting guide configured to remediate the deformity identified by the deformity identifier.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein generating the cutting guide comprises manufacturing a patient-specific cutting guide based on the preliminary cutting guide model.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing anatomic data of the patient's foot to the artificial intelligence module; and

determining the deformity identifier for the deformity by the artificial intelligence module based on at least one of the anatomic data, a bone model, and a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising providing a plurality of input parameters to the artificial intelligence module, the artificial intelligence module configured to use the input parameters to determine the deformity identifier.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the preliminary cutting guide model comprises the artificial intelligence module generating the preliminary cutting guide model.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein providing the preliminary cutting guide model comprises the artificial intelligence module selecting the preliminary cutting guide model from a set of template cutting guide models.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the artificial intelligence module determining at least one fixator to use in an osteotomy procedure planned for the patient's foot and wherein the osteotomy procedure comprises the cutting guide configured to remediate a condition present in a patient's foot.

9 . A method for remediating a condition present in a patient's foot, the method comprising:

determining, by an artificial intelligence module, a bunion deformity between a first metatarsal and a second metatarsal of a patient's foot, the determined bunion deformity based on at least one of anatomic data, a bone model, and a Computer Aided Design (CAD) model;

providing the determined bunion deformity to an artificial intelligence module;

selecting, by an artificial intelligence module, a preliminary cutting guide model from a set of template cutting guide models, the preliminary cutting guide model configured to correct the determined bunion deformity; and

generating a cutting guide based on the selected preliminary cutting guide model.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the bone model comprises a bone model of at least the first metatarsal and the second metatarsal of the patient's foot.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein generating the cutting guide comprises modifying the selected the preliminary cutting guide model to form a patient-specific cutting guide model that is used to generate the cutting guide.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein generating the cutting guide comprises manufacturing a patient-specific cutting guide based on the selected the preliminary cutting guide model.

13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein generating the cutting guide comprises:

determining a contour of bones that will contact the preliminary cutting guide model, the contour based on at least one of a bone model of the bones and anatomic data of the patient;

applying the contour to the selected preliminary cutting guide model to contour a bone apposition side of the selected preliminary cutting guide model.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising modifying the selected preliminary cutting guide model to include one or more modifications provided by a user.

15 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising an artificial intelligence module determining at least one fixator to use in an osteotomy procedure planned for the patient's foot and wherein the osteotomy procedure comprises the cutting guide configured to remediate a condition present in a patient's foot.

16 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a set of instructions for remediating a condition present in a patient's foot, the set of instructions comprising:

one or more instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a device, cause the device to:

determine, by an artificial intelligence module, a deformity of a first metatarsal in relation to a second metatarsal of a patient's foot, the determined deformity based on a bone model comprising bone models of at least the first metatarsal and the second metatarsal of the patient's foot;

provide the determined deformity to the artificial intelligence module;

select, by the artificial intelligence module, a preliminary cutting guide model from a set of template cutting guide models, the preliminary cutting guide model configured to correct the determined deformity of the first metatarsal in relation to the second metatarsal; and

generate a cutting guide based on the selected preliminary cutting guide model.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more instructions that cause the device to generate the cutting guide, cause the device to modify the selected the preliminary cutting guide model to form a patient-specific cutting guide model that is used to generate the cutting guide.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more instructions that cause the device to generate the cutting guide, cause the device to manufacture a patient-specific cutting guide based on the selected the preliminary cutting guide model.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more instructions, when generating the cutting guide, cause the device to:

determine a contour of bones of the patient that will contact the preliminary cutting guide model, the contour based on the bone model; and

apply the contour to the selected preliminary cutting guide model to contour a bone apposition side of the selected preliminary cutting guide model.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the one or more instructions further cause the device to:

modify the selected preliminary cutting guide model to include one or more modifications provided by a user.
