Abstract

A power transfer system comprises a patient support apparatus and a power transfer device. The power transfer system provides convenience and ease of connection between a power source and the patient support apparatus to provide power to one or more electrically powered devices on the patient support apparatus or to provide energy for an energy storage device on the patient support apparatus.

Claims (45)

1 . A power transfer system comprising:

a patient support apparatus including:

a support structure having a base and a patient support surface for a patient,

an apparatus controller,

an energy storage device disposed in electrical communication with the apparatus controller, and

a power receiver including a receiver coupling operatively attached to the support structure and disposed in electrical communication with the energy storage device; a power transfer device including:

a controller, and

a power transmitter coupled to the controller and configured to selectively deliver power from a power source, the power transmitter including a cord extending in electrical communication between a transmitter coupling and the power source to enable movement of the transmitter coupling relative to the power source and relative to the receiver coupling, the transmitter coupling being configured to releasably engage the receiver coupling to transfer power from the power source to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus; and

a central controller disposed in communication with the apparatus controller across a wireless network, the central controller being configured to determine a state of the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus.

2 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the central controller is further configured to determine a location of the patient support apparatus.

3 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the central controller is further configured to generate an alert in response to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus falling below a threshold level.

4 . The power transfer system of claim 3 , wherein the central controller is further configured to notify a caregiver associated with the patient support apparatus in response to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus falling below the threshold level.

5 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to determine if power is being transferred from the power transmitter to the power receiver; and

an indicator coupled to the controller and arranged to indicate that power is being transferred from the power transmitter to the power receiver.

6 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter coupling is configured to engage and physically contact the receiver coupling.

7 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter coupling is configured to magnetically engage the receiver coupling.

8 . The power transfer system of claim 7 , wherein the transmitter coupling defines a post; and

wherein the receiver coupling defines a pocket shaped to receive the post.

9 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the power receiver includes an inductive power receiver; and

wherein the power transmitter includes an inductive power transmitter configured to wirelessly transfer power to the inductive power receiver.

10 . The power transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the power transmitter further includes a housing configured for attachment adjacent to a wall surface of a facility; and

wherein the cord extends between the housing and the transmitter coupling.

The power transfer system of claim 10 , wherein the power transmitter further includes a second cord extending in electrical communication between a second transmitter coupling and the power source to enable movement of the second transmitter coupling relative to the power source and relative to the receiver coupling, the second transmitter coupling being configured to releasably engage the receiver coupling to transfer power from the power source to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus.

12 . A power transfer system comprising:

a patient support apparatus including:

a support structure having a base and a patient support surface for a patient,

an energy storage device, and

a power receiver including a receiver coupling operatively attached to the support structure and disposed in electrical communication with the energy storage device; and

a power transfer device including:

a controller, and

a power transmitter coupled to the controller and configured to selectively deliver power from a power source, the power transmitter including a housing configured for attachment adjacent to a wall surface of a facility, a first cord extending in electrical communication between a first transmitter coupling and the power source to enable movement of the first transmitter coupling relative to the power source and relative to the receiver coupling, the first transmitter coupling being configured to releasably engage the receiver coupling to transfer power from the power source to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus, and a second cord extending in electrical communication between a second transmitter coupling and the power source to enable movement of the second transmitter coupling relative to the power source and relative to the receiver coupling, the second transmitter coupling being configured to releasably engage the receiver coupling to transfer power from the power source to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus.

13 . The power transfer system of claim 12 , wherein the patient support apparatus further includes an apparatus controller; and

further comprising a central controller disposed in communication with the apparatus controller across a wireless network, the central controller being configured to determine a state of the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus.

14 . The power transfer system of claim 13 , wherein the central controller is further configured to determine a location of the patient support apparatus.

The power transfer system of claim 13 , wherein the central controller is further configured to generate an alert in response to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus falling below a threshold level, and to notify a caregiver associated with the patient support apparatus in response to the energy storage device of the patient support apparatus falling below the threshold level.

16 . The power transfer system of claim 12 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to determine if power is being transferred from the power transmitter to the power receiver; and

an indicator coupled to the controller and arranged to indicate that power is being transferred from the power transmitter to the power receiver.

17 . The power transfer system of claim 12 , wherein the first transmitter coupling and the second transmitter coupling are each configured to engage and physically contact the receiver coupling.

18 . The power transfer system of claim 12 , wherein the first transmitter coupling and the second transmitter coupling are each configured to magnetically engage the receiver coupling.

19 . The power transfer system of claim 18 , wherein the first transmitter coupling and the second transmitter coupling each define a respective post; and

wherein the receiver coupling defines a pocket shaped to receive the respective post.

20 . The power transfer system of claim 12 , wherein the power receiver includes an inductive power receiver; and

wherein the power transmitter includes an inductive power transmitter configured to wirelessly transfer power to the inductive power receiver.
