Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and compositions for the pretreatment of biomass within seconds with low inhibitor formation. The pretreatment process is used to convert biomass to a fuel or other useful chemicals by subjecting the feedstock to a rapid retention time under pressure and temperature and/or chemical reactant. The system includes a continuously-operating valve discharge apparatus to discharge pretreated feedstock while maintaining uniform pressure on the pretreatment system.

Claims (24)

1 .- 82 . (canceled)

83 . A system for industrial scale pretreatment of biomass, the system comprising:

(a) a barrel, wherein the barrel comprises a first inlet port near a first end of the barrel for receiving a biomass, an inner chamber comprising two or more zones including a feeder zone and a reaction zone, and a discharge valve opening at a second end of the barrel, wherein the feeder zone is upstream of the reaction zone in the direction from the first end to the second end,

(b) one or more rotatable screws within the inner chamber, wherein the one or more rotatable screws are configured to move the biomass through the inner chamber from the first end to the second end, wherein the one or more rotatable screws contain one or more sections configured to form one or more plugs from the biomass as the biomass is moved continuously through the inner chamber from the first end to the second end, and wherein the one or more plugs from the biomass comprises a first plug that separates the feeder zone and the reaction zone, and

(c) a pressure actuated discharge valve connected to an end flange plate at the second end of the barrel.

84 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws are capable of conveying biomass through the reaction zone in less than about 20 seconds.

85 . The system of claim 83 , further comprising a motor configured to rotate the one or more rotatable screws.

86 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the system further comprises a hopper connected to the first inlet port for feeding the biomass into the feeder zone.

87 . The system of claim 86 , wherein the hopper comprises one or more sealable ports configured to add a liquid to biomass in the hopper.

88 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the barrel further comprises one or more sealable ports configured to add steam to the reaction zone to maintain an elevated temperature, an elevated pressure, or a combination thereof in the reaction zone.

89 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the barrel further comprises one or more sealable ports configured to add one or more chemical agents to the reaction zone.

90 . The system of claim 89 , wherein the chemical agent comprises an acid or a base.

91 . The system of claim 89 , wherein the chemical agent comprises an acid.

92 . The system of claim 89 , wherein the chemical agent comprises sulfuric acid.

93 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the system further comprises a flash tank.

94 . The system of claim 83 , comprising two rotatable screws.

95 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws comprise a single flight screw element with mixing grooves.

96 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws have a left hand screw profile.

97 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws have a right hand screw profile.

98 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws comprise a reverse-flow section.

99 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the one or more rotatable screws comprise surface coatings to reduce wear and abrasion.

100 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the pressure actuated discharge valve comprises a poppet valve.

101 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the pressure actuated discharge valve comprises a valve shaft, is movably seated within a discharge valve opening at the second end of the barrel, and regulates release of a pretreated biomass out of the barrel through the discharge valve opening.

102 . The system of claim 83 , wherein the barrel further comprises one or more ports comprising a temperature gauge, a pressure gauge, or a combination thereof.
