Abstract

Many variations of systems, methods and apparatus for counting medical procedure objects, reconciling same, estimating patient blood loss during and/or after a procedure, and/or communicating between medical equipment used in a medical procedure setting are disclosed and/or illustrated herein. More particularly, many systems, methods and apparatus for counting and/or reconciling medical sponges with passive or active tracking devices, properly detecting/estimating blood loss during and/or after a medical procedure to assist with transfusion decision-making and identifying or at least alerting as to post-procedure patient risks, and/or for communicating between devices used during procedures to provide a smart/connected medical procedure environment are disclosed and/or illustrated herein.

Claims (20)

1 . An intravenous (IV) pole comprising:

a base having a plurality of wheels;

a pole having first and second ends and extending from the base at the first end and standing generally perpendicular to the base with the second end being spaced apart from the base;

a support extending from the second end of the pole to suspend medical items therefrom; and

an integral RF or RFID antenna connected to the IV pole positioned proximate the support and running a predetermined length to define a read range that includes items suspended from the support or accessories connected to the pole;

the accessories including a sponge counter rack connected relative to the pole, the sponge counter rack including a body for supporting a container for dispensing disposable sponge bags, each of the disposable sponge bags having a plurality of pockets for receiving used sponges, the body also having a plurality of supports for suspending one or more of the disposable sponge bags, the integral antenna being positioned such that it can detect a tag on one of the used sponges being inserted into one of the plurality of pockets of the disposable sponge bags when suspended by the plurality of supports of the body of the sponge counter rack.

2 . The IV pole of claim 1 wherein the integral RF or RFID antenna is a linear RF or RFID antenna disposed in or on the pole running a length of the pole.

3 . The IV pole of claim 1 wherein the integral RF or RFID antenna is a linear RF or RFID antenna disposed within the pole and runs a length of the pole.

4 . The IV pole of claim 1 wherein the integral RF or RFID antenna is a linear RF or RFID antenna disposed exteriorly along the pole and runs a length of the pole.

5 . The IV pole of claim 1 wherein the integral RF or RFID antenna is configured to detect the presence of sponges including any used sponges and to provide data relating the same to a controller.

6 . The IV pole of claim 1 , wherein the sponge counter rack further comprises an interface which allows for communication of data related to the used sponges and for a user to interact.

7 . The IV pole of claim 6 , wherein the sponge counter rack further comprises a camera for capturing pictures of the used sponges prior to insertion into one of the plurality of pockets of the disposable sponge bags.

8 . The IV pole of claim 1 , wherein the sponge counter rack further comprises a scale for weighing the disposable sponge bags.

9 . An intravenous (IV) pole accessory comprising:

an antenna having a mount for connecting the antenna to an IV pole for use in connection with the IV pole or an IV pole accessory during a medical procedure; and

a sponge counter rack connectable to the IV pole and including a body for supporting a container for dispensing disposable sponge bags, each of the disposable sponge bags having a plurality of pockets for receiving used sponges, the body also having a plurality of supports for suspending one or more of the disposable sponge bags, the antenna being positioned such that it can detect a tag on one of the used sponges being inserted into one of the plurality of pockets of the disposable sponge bags when suspended by the plurality of supports of the body of the sponge counter rack.

10 . The IV pole of claim 9 wherein the antenna is a linear antenna that runs a predetermined length to define a read range that includes items suspended along the IV pole.

11 . The IV pole of claim 9 wherein the antenna is a radial antenna that encircles the IV pole.

12 . The IV pole of claim 9 wherein the antenna is connected to or embedded in the IV pole accessory.

13 . The IV pole of claim 12 wherein the IV pole accessory is a wheel handle.
