Abstract

A laboratory automated system includes a conveyor assembly, a dock that that is movable between first and second positions, a drive assembly for moving the dock between the first and second positions, and a diverter for diverting a sample receptacle carrier from the conveyor assembly to the dock. The dock includes a first carrier support portion having a planar surface for supporting the sample receptacle carrier as the dock moves between the first and second positions. The dock includes an upwardly extending second carrier support portion situated adjacent the first carrier support portion. The second carrier support portion has a contoured side surface. The dock includes one or more magnets fixedly contained within or disposed on the second carrier support portion to magnetically couple with a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier.

Claims (56)

1 . A system for transporting a sample receptacle carrier, the system comprising:

a conveyor assembly;

a sample receptacle carrier coupled to a sample containing receptacle;

a dock that is movable between first and second positions, the dock comprising:

a first carrier support portion having a planar surface for supporting the sample receptacle carrier as the dock moves between the first and second positions;

an upwardly extending second carrier support portion adjacent the first carrier support portion, the second carrier support portion having a contoured side surface, wherein the contoured side surface of the second carrier support portion conforms to a peripheral shape of the sample receptacle carrier; and

one or more magnets fixedly contained within or disposed on the second carrier support portion, the one or more magnets being configured to magnetically couple with a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier, such that the sample receptacle carrier is secured to the dock as the dock moves between the first and second positions;

a drive assembly for moving the dock between the first and second positions; and

a diverter for diverting the sample receptacle carrier from the conveyor assembly to the dock, thereby positioning the sample receptacle carrier on the first carrier support portion.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the sample receptacle carrier is a circular puck.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is a permanent magnet.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the permanent magnet is a neodymium magnet.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is an electromagnet.

6 . The system of claim 5 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to detect a presence of the sample receptacle carrier seated on the first carrier support portion of the dock; and

a controller operatively coupled to the electromagnet and configured to transmit a control signal to activate the electromagnet when the sensor senses the presence of the sample receptacle carrier seated on the first carrier support portion of the dock.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the second carrier support portion defines a cavity, and wherein each of the one or more magnets is positioned in the cavity.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is positioned such that the one or more magnets are spaced apart from the periphery of the sample receptacle carrier when the sample receptacle carrier is magnetically coupled with the one or more magnets.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly comprises a sample receptacle carrier track.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly comprises:

a motor;

a first pulley coupled to the motor;

a second pulley; and

a drive belt coupled to the first and second pulleys and coupled to the dock,

wherein the motor is configured to rotate the first pulley and, in turn, the drive belt, thereby moving the dock between the first and second positions.

11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the dock is beneath an automated pipettor at the second position.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the automated pipettor is contained within a processing instrument, and wherein the first position is outside the processing instrument.

13 . A system for transporting a sample receptacle carrier, the system comprising:

a conveyor assembly;

a sample receptacle carrier coupled to a sample containing receptacle;

a dock that is movable between first and second positions, the dock comprising:

a first carrier support portion having a planar surface for supporting the sample receptacle carrier as the dock moves between the first and second positions;

an upwardly extending second carrier support portion adjacent the first carrier support portion, the second carrier support portion having a contoured side surface, wherein the contoured side surface of the second carrier support portion conforms to a peripheral shape of the sample carrier; and

one or more magnets fixedly contained within or disposed on the second carrier support portion, the one or more magnets being configured to magnetically couple with a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier, such that the sample receptacle carrier is secured to the dock as the dock moves between the first and second positions;

a drive assembly for moving the dock between the first and second positions; and

a rotating diverter for diverting the sample receptacle carrier from a transfer position on the conveyor assembly to the planar surface of the first carrier support portion, wherein the rotating diverter defines a recess configured to receive at least a portion of the sample receptacle carrier at the transfer position on the conveyor assembly.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sample receptacle carrier is a circular puck.

15 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sample receptacle carrier is a circular puck.

16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is a permanent magnet.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the permanent magnet is a neodymium magnet.

18 . The system of claim 13 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is an electromagnet.

19 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising:

a sensor configured to detect a presence of the sample receptacle carrier seated on the first carrier support portion of the dock; and

a controller operatively coupled to the electromagnet and configured to transmit a control signal to activate the electromagnet when the sensor senses the presence of the sample receptacle carrier seated on the first carrier support portion of the dock.

20 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the second carrier support portion defines a cavity, and wherein each of the one or more magnets is positioned in the cavity.

21 . The system of claim 13 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is positioned such that the one or more magnets are spaced apart from the periphery of the sample receptacle carrier when the sample receptacle carrier is magnetically coupled with the one or more magnets.

22 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the drive assembly comprises a sample receptacle carrier track.

23 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the drive assembly comprises:

a motor;

a first pulley coupled to the motor;

a second pulley; and
