Abstract

A length indicator associated with an encoded representation of a slice is parsed. The length indicator is indicative of a length of an extension field present in a slice header of the encoded representation. A decoder can then determine to ignore, during decoding of the encoded representation, any value of the extension field in the slice header where these values are identified based on the length indicator. As a consequence, an extension field can be added to slice headers and still enable legacy decoders to correctly decode the encoded representations.

Claims (26)

1 . A decoder configured to decode an encoded representation of a slice of a picture, the encoded representation including a slice header and slice data, the slice header including an extension field, the decoder configured to:

identify a location of the extension field;

decode the encoded representation without using the extension field when the decoder is configured for non-extension compliant operation; and

decode the encoded representation using the extension field when the decoder is configured for extension-compliant operation.

2 . The decoder of claim 1 , wherein the slice header includes a length indicator.

3 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the extension field follows the length indicator in the slice header.

4 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the decoder is configured to identify an end of the extension field in the slice header based on a length of the extension field.

5 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the decoder is further configured to decode the encoded representation based on a value of an extension present flag in the slice header.

6 . The decoder of claim 5 , wherein the decoder is configured to identify a parameter set associated with the encoded representation, the parameter set include the extension present flag.

7 . The decoder of claim 6 , wherein the parameter set is associated with the encoded representation by a parameter set identifier.

8 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the length indicator indicates a start of the slice data.

9 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the decoder is configured to associate the length indicator with the encoded representation by inserting a coded representation of the length indicator into the slice header.

10 . The decoder of claim 2 , wherein the length indicator indicates a length of the extension field.

11 . A method in a decoder configured to decode an encoded representation of a slice of a picture, the encoded representation including a slice header and slice data, the slice header including an extension field, the method comprising:

identifying a location of the extension field;

decoding the encoded representation without using the extension field when the decoder is configured for non-extension compliant operation; and

decoding the encoded representation using the extension field when the decoder is configured for extension-compliant operation.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the slice header includes a length indicator.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the extension field follows the length indicator in the slice header.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising identifying an end of the extension field in the slice header based on a length of the extension field.

15 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising decoding the encoded representation based on a value of an extension present flag in the slice header.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising identifying a parameter set associated with the encoded representation, the parameter set include the extension present flag.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the parameter set is associated with the encoded representation by a parameter set identifier.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the length indicator indicates a start of the slice data.

19 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising associating the length indicator with the encoded representation by inserting a coded representation of the length indicator into the slice header.

20 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the length indicator indicates a length of the extension field.
