Abstract

A garment worn by a wearer has an exterior shell and an interior shell with various impact absorbing material between the exterior shell and the interior shell. The impact absorbing material includes multiple structures, such as rods or filaments, capable of deforming when force is applied then returning to its state prior to application of the force. In various embodiments, a rate sensitive material (RSM) is positioned in one or more locations relative to the exterior shell and the interior shell of the garment to further attenuate impacts to the garment. The RSM changes its resistance to force based on a rate at which the material is loaded.

Claims (23)

1. A helmet comprising:

an outer shell with an inner surface configured to face toward a wearer of the helmet;

at least one interior cushioning member arranged within the outer shell and configured to be disposed between the inner surface and the wearer of the helmet; and

a plurality of modular rate-sensitive members (RSMs), the plurality of modular RSMs respectively spanning across different predetermined areas of the inner surface inside the outer shell, the plurality of modular RSMs configured to provide a rate sensitive response that resists an impact force based on a rate at which the impact force is applied to the respective one of the plurality of modular RSMs, wherein;

the plurality of modular RSMs respectively comprises a plurality of impact absorbing structures; and

at least one of the plurality of modular RSMs, the at least one interior cushioning member, and the outer shell are disposed in overlapping layers.

2. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the respective one of the plurality of modular RSMs absorbs energy from the impact force by compressing or collapsing.

3. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the respective one of the plurality of modular RSMs is configured to stiffen based on the rate associated with the impact force.

4. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures respectively comprise a urethane material.

5. The helmet of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures comprise filaments of the urethane material capable of deforming when the impact force is applied and the filaments are configured to return to a state prior to application of the impact force.

6. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures comprise filaments capable of deforming when the impact force is applied.

7. The helmet of claim 6 , wherein one or more of the filaments comprise an elongated, columnar body.

8. The helmet of claim 6 , wherein the filaments are configured to return to a state prior to application of the impact force.

9. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell is configured to transmit the impact force to a localized section of the plurality of impact absorbing structures.

10. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures comprise cross-shaped modules.

11. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures comprise cellular structures, the cellular structures comprising filaments capable of deforming when the impact force is applied.

12. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the respective one of the plurality of modular RSMs provides resistance to the impact force by stiffening based on the rate associated with the impact force to increase a number of the plurality of impact absorbing structures that are engaged.

13. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein compression of one or more of the plurality of impact absorbing structures dampens the impact force from a linear impact to the helmet.

14. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the respective one of the plurality of modular RSMs stiffens at the rate at which one or more of the plurality of impact absorbing structures undergoes strain due to the impact force.

15. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of impact absorbing structures respectively includes an extension that that is disposed oblique relative to the predetermined area of the inner surface.

16. The helmet of claim 15 , wherein the extension is a wall disposed oblique relative to the predetermined area of the inner surface.

17. The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the at least one interior cushioning member includes foam.

The helmet of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of modular RSMs includes a first RSM and a second RSM, the first RSM disposed in a first overlapping layer with the at least one interior cushioning member and the outer shell at a first predetermined area of the inner surface, and the second RSM disposed in a second overlapping layer with the at least one interior cushioning member and the outer shell at a second predetermined area of the inner surface.
