Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a system and method for repairing an articular surface. A guide pin may be secured to an articular surface of a glenoid, wherein the guide pin defines a working axis and the working axis is positioned at an angle α relative to the articular surface, wherein angle α is less than or equal to 90 degrees. An excision device may be advanced over the guide pin, wherein the excision device includes a cannulated shaft and at least one cutter, wherein the at least one cutter is generally aligned in a single plane. A generally hemi-spherical excision site may be formed with the excision device within the articular surface of the glenoid.

Claims (26)

1 . A method for securing a glenoid implant into a glenoid region of a scapula bone, the method comprising the steps of:

advancing an excision device along a working axis, wherein the working axis is positioned at an angle α relative to an articular surface of the glenoid region of the scapula bone, the articular surface comprising an original contour, wherein the angle α is selected to avoid contact between the excision device and a corresponding humerus bone;

rotating at least a portion of the excision device about the working axis to modify the original contour of the articular surface by forming a substantially hemi-spherical excision site therein; and

securing the glenoid implant comprising a bone facing surface and a load bearing surface within the excision site in an inlay configuration such that the load bearing surface of the glenoid implant substantially matches the original contour of the articular surface.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising confirming at least one of a position and an orientation of the load bearing surface of the glenoid implant substantially corresponds to the original contour of the articular surface of the glenoid region along at least one of an anterior-posterior plane and a superior-inferior plane.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the load bearing surface of the glenoid implant has a substantially concaved curvature.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the substantially concaved curvature has a substantially hemi-spherical shape.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the load bearing surface is based on two or more curvatures.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the two or more curvatures comprise a first curvature extending along an anterior-posterior axis and a second curvature extending along a superior-inferior axis.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the implant comprises a keel extending from the bone facing surface of the glenoid implant.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the excision site comprises one or more cavities configured to receive at least a portion of the keel.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the keel is configured to facilitate at least one of alignment of the implant with respect to the articular surface of the glenoid region of the scapula bone and increasing a mechanical connection between the glenoid implant and the glenoid region of the scapula bone.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the angle α is between 45-90 degrees.

11 . A method for securing a glenoid implant into a glenoid region of a scapula bone, the method comprising the steps of:

advancing an excision device along a working axis, wherein the working axis is positioned at an angle α relative to an articular surface of the glenoid region of the scapula bone, the articular surface comprising an original contour;

rotating at least a portion of the excision device about the working axis to modify the original contour of the articular surface by forming an excision site therein; and

securing the glenoid implant comprising a bone facing surface and a load bearing surface defined by a perimeter within the excision site in an inlay configuration such that the perimeter of the load bearing surface is substantially flush with tissue surrounding the excision site.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising confirming at least one of a position and an orientation of the load bearing surface of the glenoid implant substantially corresponds to an original contour of the articular surface of the glenoid region along at least one of an anterior-posterior plane and a superior-inferior plane.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the load bearing surface of the glenoid implant has a substantially concaved curvature.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the substantially concaved curvature has a substantially hemi-spherical shape.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the load bearing surface is based on two or more curvatures.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the two or more curvatures comprise a first curvature extending along an anterior-posterior axis and a second curvature extending along a superior-inferior axis.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the glenoid implant comprises a keel extending from the bone facing surface of the glenoid implant.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the excision site comprises one or more cavities configured to receive at least a portion of the keel.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the keel is configured to facilitate at least one of alignment of the glenoid implant with respect to the articular surface of the glenoid region of the scapula bone and increasing a mechanical connection between the glenoid implant and the glenoid region of the scapula bone.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the angle α is between 45-90 degrees.
