Abstract

Techniques for characterizing an optical system (for example, a printer verifier) are provided. In this regard, the optical system may be characterized for scanning a printer image. The characterization of the optical system includes determining an effective aperture size of the optical system, and correspondingly an effective resolution at which the optical system can be configured to scan a portion of the printer image according to verification requirements.

Claims (77)

1. A printer comprising:

a printhead;

an optical system comprising an optical sensor; and

a processor in electronic communication with the optical system and the printhead, wherein the processor is configured to:

cause the printer to print a pattern comprising bars and spaces of defined specifications;

cause the optical sensor to scan the printed pattern;

analyze a scanned reflectance profile (SRP) of the scanned printed pattern based on:

determining a first width of at least one space in the scanned printed pattern;

determining a second width of at least one bar in the scanned printed pattern; and

comparing the determined first width of at least one space with the determined second width of at least one bar to validate the scanned printed pattern according to a pre-defined acceptance criterion; and

record thermal management settings of the printer.

2. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the pre-defined acceptance criterion comprises at least one of: a print quality parameter based on a printing of the scanned printed pattern, or a set of rules that dictate an optimal printing of the scanned printed pattern by the printer.

3. The printer of claim 2 , wherein the processor is configured to:

cause the printer to print a second test pattern at the recorded thermal management settings; and

calibrate the optical sensor using an effective aperture size of the optical sensor determined based on analyzing the second test pattern.

4. The printer of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that the determined first width of at least one space is not equal to the determined second width of at least one bar; and

adjust the thermal management settings of the printer.

5. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the determined first width of at least one space is less than the determined second width of at least one bar; and

in response to determining that the determined first width of at least one space is less than the determined second width of at least one bar, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by decreasing heat settings associated with the printhead.

6. The printer of claim 4 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine whether the determined first width of at least one space is greater than the determined second width of at least one bar; and

in response to determining that the determined first width of at least one space is greater than the determined second width of at least one bar, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by increasing heat settings associated with the printhead.

7. A method comprising:

causing, by a processor, a printer to print a pattern comprising bars and spaces of defined specifications;

causing, by the processor, an optical sensor to scan the printed pattern;

analyzing, by the processor, a scanned reflectance profile (SRP) of the scanned printed pattern based on:

determining a first width of at least one space in the scanned printed pattern;

determining a second width of at least one bar in the scanned printed pattern; and

comparing the determined first width of at least one space with the determined second width of at least one bar to validate the scanned printed pattern according to a pre-defined acceptance criterion; and

recording, by the processor, thermal management settings for the printer.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the pre-defined acceptance criterion comprises at least one of: a print quality parameter based on a printing of the scanned printed pattern, or a set of rules that dictate an optimal printing of the scanned printed pattern by the printer.

9. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

determining whether the determined first width of at least one space is less than the determined second width of at least one bar; and

in response to determining that the determined first width of at least one space is less than the determined second width of at least one bar, adjusting the thermal management settings of the printer by decreasing heat settings associated with a printhead of the printer.

10. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

determining whether the determined first width of at least one space is greater than the determined second width of at least one bar; and

in response to determining that the determined first width of at least one space is greater than the determined second width of at least one bar, adjusting the thermal management settings of the printer by increasing heat settings associated with a printhead of the printer.

11. The method of claim 7 further comprising:

causing the printer to print a second test pattern at the recorded thermal management settings; and

calibrating the optical sensor using an effective aperture size of the optical sensor determined based on analyzing the second test pattern.

12. A printer comprising:

a printhead;

an optical system comprising an optical sensor; and

a processor in electronic communication with the optical system and the printhead, wherein the processor is configured to:

cause the printer to print a test pattern comprising bars and spaces of defined specifications, wherein the defined specifications comprise a first set of bars, a second set of bars, a first set of spaces, and a second set of spaces;

cause the optical sensor to scan the test pattern; and

analyze the scanned test pattern based on:

generating a scanned reflectance profile (SRP) of the scanned test pattern;

measuring a first center position indicative of a first median reflectance value of the first set of bars in the SRP;

measuring a second center position indicative of a second median reflectance value of the second set of bars in the SRP;

measuring a third center position indicative of a third median reflectance value of the first set of spaces in the SRP;

measuring a fourth center position indicative of a fourth median reflectance value of the second set of spaces in the SRP; and

validating the scanned test pattern according to a pre-defined acceptance criterion by:

comparing the first center position with the second center position; and

comparing the third center position with the fourth center position.

13. The printer of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the first center position is not equal to the second center position; and

in response to determining that the first center position is not equal to the second center position, adjust thermal management settings of the printer.

14. The printer of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the first center position is less than the second center position; and

in response to determining that the first center position is less than the second center position, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by decreasing heat settings associated with the printhead.

15. The printer of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the first center position is greater than the second center position, and

in response to determining that the first center position is greater than the second center position, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by increasing heat settings associated with the printhead.

16. The printer of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the third center position is not equal to the fourth center position; and

in response to determining that the third center position is not equal to the fourth center position, adjust thermal management settings of the printer.

17. The printer of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the third center position is less than the fourth center position; and

in response to determining that the third center position is less than the fourth center position, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by decreasing heat settings associated with the printhead.

18. The printer of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the third center position is greater than the fourth center position; and

in response to determining that the third center position is greater than the fourth center position, adjust the thermal management settings of the printer by increasing heat settings associated with a print head of the printer.

19. The printer of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to cause the printer to print a second test pattern at recorded thermal management settings.

20. The printer of claim 19 , wherein the processor is configured to calibrate the optical sensor using an effective aperture size of the optical sensor determined based on analyzing the second test pattern.
