Abstract

An apparatus is directed to transporting a sample receptacle carrier coupled to a sample containing receptacle. The apparatus includes a movable dock to support the sample receptacle carrier. The apparatus includes one or more magnets. Each magnet is coupled to the movable dock to magnetically couple with a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier. The one or more magnets secure the sample receptacle carrier to the movable dock.

Claims (29)

2 . A method of transporting a sample-containing receptacle coupled to a sample receptacle carrier, the method comprising:

(a) moving the sample receptacle carrier on a conveyor assembly;

(b) diverting the sample receptacle carrier from a first transfer position on the conveyor assembly onto a movable dock;

(c) magnetically coupling a magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier with one or more magnets fixedly contained within or fixedly disposed on the movable dock to secure the sample receptacle carrier to the movable dock; and

(d) moving the dock magnetically coupled to the sample receptacle carrier from a first position to a second position.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first position is located outside of a housing of a sample processing instrument, and wherein the second position is located inside the housing of the sample processing instrument.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising, after (d):

(e) moving the dock magnetically coupled to the sample receptacle carrier from the second position to a third position; and

(f) magnetically decoupling the magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier with the one or more magnets on the movable dock at the third position.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the third position is the same as the first position.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein (f) further comprises:

diverting the sample receptacle carrier from the movable dock to a second transfer position on the conveyor assembly.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the diverting of (b) and (f) is performed with a rotating diverter having at least one recess formed therein for receiving at least a portion of the sample receptacle carrier at each of the first and second transfer positions.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the diverter has a generally circular shape, and wherein the at least one recess has a substantially half-circular shape.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is an electromagnet, and wherein (c) further comprises activating the electromagnet when the sample carrier is diverted onto the movable dock.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein after (b) and before (c), detecting, by a sensor, a presence of the sample receptacle carrier located on the movable dock.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein each of the one or more magnets is a permanent magnet, and wherein (c) further comprises moving the magnetic portion of the sample receptacle carrier within a magnetic field of the permanent magnet.

The method of claim 2 , wherein (b) further comprises diverting the sample receptacle carrier from the first transfer position on the conveyor assembly onto the movable dock such that a bottom surface of the sample receptacle carrier engages a surface of a first carrier portion of the movable dock.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein (a) further comprises engaging the bottom surface of the sample receptacle carrier on a movable surface of the conveyor assembly.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the surface of the first carrier portion of the movable dock and the movable surface of the conveyor assembly are arranged along the same plane.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein (b) further comprises engaging a side surface of the sample receptacle carrier against a surface of a second carrier portion of the movable dock.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the surface of the second carrier portion of the movable dock is contoured to match a shape of the side surface of the sample receptacle carrier.

17 . The method of claim 2 , wherein (d) further comprises rotating a drive belt coupled to the dock around a first pulley and a second pulley.

18 . The method of claim 2 , wherein (d) further comprises sliding the dock magnetically coupled to the sample receptacle carrier along a rail extending from the first position to the second position.

19 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising, after (d):

(e) aligning the sample-containing receptacle coupled to the sample receptacle carrier to an orientation corresponding to a direction of travel of a robotic arm.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the robotic arm is an automated pipettor.

21 . The method of claim 19 , wherein (e) further comprises receiving a portion of the sample-containing receptacle in a recess defined in an alignment plate located adjacent to the second position of the dock.
