PRETREATMENT OF LIGNOCELLULOSE USING TWO STAGE ALKALI AND MECHANICAL REFINING PROCESSES
Disclosed herein are processes for ethanol production from a lignocellulosic feedstock. These processes provide DMR of lignocellulosic biomass comprising two-stage deacetylation followed by mechanical refining so as to increase fermentable sugar yield while reducing hydrolytic enzyme loading requirements.
1 . A method for treating lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production, comprising:
(i) reacting the lignocellulosic biomass with a first alkali to produce a first stage biomass;
(ii) dewatering the first stage biomass to isolate a first stream of first stage solids;
wherein first alkali has a pH of from about 10 to about 12; and
wherein the lignocellulosic biomass comprises xylan, and wherein less than about 4% of the xylan in the lignocellulosic biomass is solubilized in step (i).
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first alkali is selected from at least one of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, trimethylamine, or methylamine.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first alkali is present in an amount from about 40 kg to about 100 kg of first alkali per tonne of lignocellulosic biomass.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein contacting the first alkali is conducted at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 100° C. and at about ambient pressure, wherein the ambient pressure is 101,325 pascals +30%.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the dewatering of step (ii) comprises the use of a screw type solid-liquid separator.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein dewatering the first stage biomass produces a first stage black liquor, wherein:
the first stage black liquor removes from 5% to 15% of an amount of lignin in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of ash in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of acetate in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii); or the first stage black liquor removes from 3 wt % to 30 wt % of an amount of solids in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii).
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the lignocellulosic biomass is selected from at least one of corn stover, sorghum stover, rice straw, wheat straw, cotton residue, sunflower straw, sugarcane bagasse, rice hulls, Miscanthus giganteus, switch grass, duckweed, kudzu, or perennial vines.
8 . A method for treating lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production, comprising:
(i) reacting the lignocellulosic biomass with a first alkali to produce a first stage biomass;
(ii) dewatering the first stage biomass to isolate a first stream of first stage solids;
wherein first alkali has a pH of from about 10 to about 12; and
wherein the lignocellulosic biomass comprises galactan, and wherein less than about 22% of the galactan in the lignocellulosic biomass is solubilized in step (i).
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first alkali is selected from at least one of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, trimethylamine, or methylamine.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first alkali is present in an amount from about 40 kg to about 80 kg of first alkali per tonne of lignocellulosic biomass.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein contacting the first alkali is conducted at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 100° C. and at about ambient pressure, wherein the ambient pressure is 101,325 pascals +30%.
12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the dewatering of step (ii) comprises the use of a screw type solid-liquid separator.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein dewatering the first stage biomass produces a first stage black liquor, wherein:
the first stage black liquor removes from 5% to 15% of an amount of lignin in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of ash in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of acetate in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii); or the first stage black liquor removes from 3 wt % to 30 wt % of an amount of solids in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii).
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the lignocellulosic biomass is selected from at least one of corn stover, sorghum stover, rice straw, wheat straw, cotton residue, sunflower straw, sugarcane bagasse, rice hulls, Miscanthus giganteus, switch grass, duckweed, kudzu, or perennial vines.
15 . A method for treating lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production, comprising:
(i) reacting the lignocellulosic biomass with a first alkali to produce a first stage biomass;
(ii) dewatering the first stage biomass to isolate a first stream of first stage solids;
wherein first alkali has a pH of from about 10 to about 12; and
wherein the lignocellulosic biomass comprises arabinan, and wherein less than about 18% of the arabinan in the lignocellulosic biomass is solubilized in step (i).
16 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first alkali is selected from at least one of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, trimethylamine, or methylamine.
17 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first alkali is present in an amount from about 40 kg to about 80 kg of first alkali per tonne of lignocellulosic biomass.
18 . The method of claim 8 , wherein contacting the first alkali is conducted at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 100° C. and at about ambient pressure, wherein the ambient pressure is 101,325 pascals +30%.
19 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the dewatering of step (ii) comprises the use of a screw type solid-liquid separator.
20 . The method of claim 8 , wherein dewatering the first stage biomass produces a first stage black liquor, wherein:
the first stage black liquor removes from 5% to 15% of an amount of lignin in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of ash in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii);
the first stage black liquor removes from 60% to 90% of an amount of acetate in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii); or the first stage black liquor removes from 3 wt % to 30 wt % of an amount of solids in the lignocellulosic biomass following steps (i) and (ii).
21 . A method for treating lignocellulosic biomass for ethanol production, comprising:
(i) reacting the lignocellulosic biomass with a first alkali to produce a first stage biomass;
(ii) dewatering the first stage biomass to isolate a first stream of first stage solids;
wherein first alkali has a pH of from about 10 to about 12;
wherein the first alkali is selected from at least one of sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, trimethylamine, or methylamine;
wherein the first alkali is present in an amount from about 40 kg to about 100 kg of first alkali per tonne of lignocellulosic biomass; and
wherein contacting the first alkali is conducted at a temperature of from about 80° C. to about 100° C. and at about ambient pressure, wherein the ambient pressure is 101,325 pascals +30%.
22 . The method of claim 21 further comprising:
performing ozonolysis on the first stage solids by contacting ozone with the first stage solids.
