Abstract

A mechanical thrombectomy apparatus for removing a clot from a vessel includes an elongate inversion support catheter having a distal end opening, an elongate puller extending within the support catheter, and a knitted tractor tube extending over an outer surface of the support catheter, inverting into the distal end opening of the support catheter, and attached to the elongate puller at a first end within the support catheter, wherein the portion of the knitted tractor tube extending over the support catheter comprises a wire forming a helical spiral of alternating teardrop shaped-links each having a rounded apex, wherein each link is connected to two adjacent links so that the apex of each link is on an outward-facing surface of the tractor tube, wherein the links flare outward from an outer wall of the support catheter when the puller is pulled proximally within the support catheter.

Claims (38)

1 . A thrombectomy device, comprising:

an inversion support catheter having an outer surface, a distal end, and a distal end opening;

a puller positioned within the inversion support catheter;

a tractor tube having a first portion extending over the outer surface of the inversion support catheter and terminating at an unattached first end of the tractor tube, the tractor tube configured to invert over and into the distal end opening of the inversion support catheter;

wherein a second end of the tractor tube is attached to the puller; and

wherein the first portion of the tractor tube extending over the outer surface of the inversion support catheter comprises a plurality of interlocking links that are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter.

2 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

3 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

4 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

5 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links are arranged in axially-spaced rings of interlocking rings.

6 . The thrombectomy device of claim 5 , wherein the axially-spaced rings of interlocking rings include a first ring and a second ring, and wherein the first ring is coupled to the second ring at a joint.

7 . The thrombectomy device of claim 6 , wherein the joint has a joint stiffness that is less than a first ring stiffness of the first ring, a second ring stiffness of the second ring, or both.

8 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links form alternating stiff regions and less stiff regions.

9 . The thrombectomy device of claim 8 , wherein the alternating stiff regions and less stiff regions helically spiral around the inversion support catheter.

10 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links are arranged along a length of the tractor tube such that longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links are joined together at a joint.

11 . The thrombectomy device of claim 10 , wherein the joint has a stiffness that is less than a stiffness of the longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links.

12 . The thrombectomy device of claim 1 , wherein the tractor tube is knitted.

13 . A thrombectomy device, comprising:

an inversion support catheter having an outer surface, a distal end, and a distal end opening;

a puller positioned within the inversion support catheter;

a tractor tube having a first portion extending over the outer surface of the inversion support catheter and terminating at an unattached first end of the tractor tube, the tractor tube configured to invert over and into the distal end opening of the inversion support catheter;

wherein a second end of the tractor tube is attached to the puller;

wherein the tractor tube comprises a plurality of interlocking links;

wherein the plurality of interlocking links are arranged along a length of the tractor tube such that longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links are joined together at a hinge region; and

wherein the hinge region has a stiffness that is less than a stiffness of the longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links.

14 . The thrombectomy device of claim 13 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

15 . The thrombectomy device of claim 13 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

16 . The thrombectomy device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

17 . A thrombectomy device, comprising:

an inversion support catheter having an outer surface, a distal end, and a distal end opening;

a puller positioned within the inversion support catheter;

a tractor tube having a first end, a second end coupled to the puller, and a first portion extending over the outer surface of the inversion support catheter;

wherein the tractor tube is configured to invert over and into the distal end opening of the inversion support catheter;

wherein the tractor tube comprises a plurality of interlocking links with a plurality of hinge regions joining longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links; and

wherein at least one of the plurality of hinge regions has a stiffness that is less than a stiffness of at least one of the longitudinally-adjacent interlocking links.

18 . The thrombectomy device of claim 17 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

19 . The thrombectomy device of claim 17 , wherein a subset of the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.

20 . The thrombectomy device of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of interlocking links are configured to flare outwardly from the outer surface of the inversion support catheter in a seesawing motion as the puller is pulled proximally within the inversion support catheter.
