Abstract

Cryogenic storage system provides automated storage and retrieval of samples in a cryogenic environment, as well as automated transfer of individual samples between cryogenic environments. Stored samples are maintained under a cryogenic temperature threshold, while also enabling access to the samples. The samples may be organized and tracked by scanning a barcode of each sample. The system may also comprise multiple storage vaults and provide for transfer of individual samples between the storage vaults, as well as between a storage vault and a removable cryogenic storage device.

Claims (14)

1 . A cryogenic storage vault comprising:

an insulated freezer; and

at least one refrigerant coil positioned at a top portion internal to the insulated freezer, the at least one refrigerant coil configured to expel a refrigerant into the insulated freezer via a plurality of orifices.

2 . The storage vault of claim 1 , further comprising at least one rack configured to store a plurality of trays, each storing a plurality of samples, the rack positioned below the at least one refrigerant coil.

3 . The storage vault of claim 2 , wherein the at least one refrigerant coil is further configured to expel the refrigerant through the rack toward a bottom portion of the insulated freezer.

4 . The storage vault of claim 1 , wherein the at least one refrigerant coil is further configured to expel the refrigerant in a manner that maintains a positive pressure within the insulated freezer.

5 . The storage vault of claim 1 , wherein the insulated freezer is a Dewar vessel.

6 . A method of removing sample storage racks from a cryogenic storage freezer comprising a spindle of sample storage racks holding sample trays, the method comprising:

removing a lid of the cryogenic storage freezer;

covering an open top end of the cryogenic storage freezer with an insulated shroud; and

lifting the spindle of sample storage racks into a volume enclosed by the insulated shroud.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

moving the insulated shroud to a position above a replacement cryogenic storage freezer; and

lowering the spindle of sample storage racks into the replacement cryogenic storage freezer.
