Abstract

Techniques are described for measuring angle and/or orientation of a rear drivable section (e.g., a trailer unit of a semi-trailer truck) relative to a front drivable section (e.g., a tractor unit of the semi-trailer truck) using an example rotary encoder assembly. The example rotary encoder assembly comprises a base surface; a housing that includes a second end that is connected to the base surface and a first end that is at least partially open and is coupled to a housing cap; and a rotary encoder that is located in the housing in between the base surface and the housing cap, where the rotary encoder includes a rotatable shaft that protrudes from a first hole located in the housing cap, and where a top of the rotatable shaft located away from the rotary encoder is coupled to magnet(s).

Claims (49)

1 . A method of performing vehicle operation, comprising:

receiving, from a device located in a vehicle, an angle and an orientation of a trailer relative to the vehicle, wherein the trailer is coupled to a rear of the vehicle;

receiving a video from a camera located on the vehicle; and

causing a monitor to display a position of the trailer based on the angle and the orientation and based on the video.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a first determination that the trailer is not within a range of angles from the vehicle; and

causing, in response to the first determination, the vehicle to steer the vehicle that causes the trailer to move to be within the range of angles from the vehicle.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the vehicle is caused to steer in a same direction in which the trailer has moved that caused the trailer to be not within the range of angles from the vehicle.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the range of angles is based on a speed of the vehicle.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein in response to the speed being greater than a first threshold, the range of angles is broader than the range of angles in response to the speed being greater than a second threshold greater than the first threshold.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an estimate of a center of gravity of the vehicle and the trailer based on the angle and the orientation.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the device includes rotary encoder that is removably coupled to a portion of the trailer.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining one or more positions of one or more objects located using the video from the camera; and

causing the vehicle to steer or to apply brakes to control movement of the trailer in response to the angle and the orientation of the trailer and in response to the one or more positions of the one or more objects.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing a second determination, using the angle and the orientation and using the video, that the trailer of the vehicle is expected to hit another vehicle; and

in response to the second determination:

determining a trajectory for the vehicle to avoid having the trailer hit the another vehicle, or

causing brakes of the vehicle to be applied until the another vehicle drives away.

10 . An apparatus comprising one or more processors and a memory configured to store one or more instructions that upon execution by the one or more processors causes the apparatus to:

receive, from a device located in a vehicle, an angle and an orientation of a trailer relative to the vehicle, wherein the trailer is coupled to a rear of the vehicle;

receive a video from a camera located on the vehicle; and

cause a monitor to display a position of the trailer based on the angle and the orientation and based on the video.

11 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to further cause the apparatus to:

perform a first determination that the trailer is not within a range of angles from the vehicle; and

cause, in response to the first determination, the vehicle to steer the vehicle that causes the trailer to move to be within the range of angles from the vehicle.

12 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the vehicle is caused to steer in a same direction in which the trailer has moved that caused the trailer to be not within the range of angles from the vehicle.

13 . The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the range of angles is based on a speed of the vehicle.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein in response to the speed being greater than a first threshold, the range of angles is broader than the range of angles in response to the speed being greater than a second threshold greater than the first threshold.

15 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to further cause the apparatus to:

determining an estimate of a center of gravity of the vehicle and the trailer based on the angle and the orientation.

16 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the device includes rotary encoder that is removably coupled to a portion of the trailer.

17 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to further cause the apparatus to:

determine one or more positions of one or more objects located using the video from the camera; and

cause the vehicle to steer or to apply brakes to control movement of the trailer in response to the angle and the orientation of the trailer and in response to the one or more positions of the one or more objects.

18 . The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to further cause the apparatus to:

perform a second determination, using the angle and the orientation and using the video, that the trailer of the vehicle is expected to hit another vehicle; and

in response to the second determination:

determine a trajectory for the vehicle to avoid having the trailer hit the another vehicle, or

cause brakes of the vehicle to be applied until the another vehicle drives away.

19 . A non-transitory computer readable program storage medium having code stored thereon, the code, when executed by one or more processors, causing an apparatus to implement a method, comprising:

receiving, from a device located in a vehicle, an angle and an orientation of a trailer relative to the vehicle, wherein the trailer is coupled to a rear of the vehicle;

receiving a video from a camera located on the vehicle; and

causing a monitor to display a position of the trailer based on the angle and the orientation and based on the video.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable program storage medium of claim 19 , wherein the method further comprises:

performing a first determination that the trailer is not within a range of angles from the vehicle; and

causing, in response to the first determination, the vehicle to steer the vehicle that causes the trailer to move to be within the range of angles from the vehicle.
