Abstract

Disclosed are embodiments that determine a location of a first wireless device based on estimates of two other wireless devices. Each of the other wireless devices is assigned or defines its own plurality of regions. Each wireless device estimates a location of the first wireless device with respect to its assigned or defined plurality of regions. One of the estimates is then translated to the other device's plurality of regions. The two estimates are then combined to estimate the location of the first wireless device.

Claims (43)

1 . A system comprising:

processing circuitry; and

memory storing instructions that when executed cause the processing circuitry to:

obtain a first location estimate of a wireless device relative to a first reference coordinate system defined by a first reference device and a second location estimate of the wireless device relative to a second reference coordinate system defined by a second wireless device;

map, based on a location of the second reference device relative to a location of the first reference device, the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system;

aggregate the first location estimate of the wireless device and the mapped second location estimate of the wireless device; and

determine a location of the wireless device within the first reference coordinate system based on the aggregation.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first reference device and the second reference device are access point (AP) devices.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions further cause the processing circuitry to determine the location of the first reference device based on phase differences of signals exchanged between the first reference device and the second reference device.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein to determine the location of the first reference device, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to compare expected phase differences of signals to be received by the second reference device and measured phase differences of signals received by the second reference device.

5 . The system of claim 1 ,

wherein to obtain the first location estimate of the wireless device relative to the first reference coordinate system, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to determine the first location estimate of the wireless device relative to the first reference coordinate system based on one or more signals received by the first reference device from the wireless device, and

wherein to obtain the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to determine the second location estimate of the wireless device relative of the second reference coordinate system based on one or more signals received by the second reference device from the wireless device.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein to aggregate the first location estimate of the wireless device and the mapped second location estimate of the wireless device, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to average the first location estimate and the mapped second location estimate.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein to map the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to transform the second location estimate of the wireless device to an equivalent position within the first reference coordinate system.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein to map the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system, the instructions cause the processing circuitry to:

determine the location of the second reference device with respect to the first reference device; and

adjust the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system based on the location of the second reference device.

9 . A method comprising:

obtaining a first location estimate of a wireless device relative to a first reference coordinate system defined by a first reference device and a second location estimate of the wireless device relative to a second reference coordinate system defined by a second reference device;

mapping, based on a location of the second reference device relative to a location of the first reference device, the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system;

aggregating the first location estimate of the wireless device and the mapped second location estimate of the wireless device; and

determining a location of the wireless device within the first reference coordinate system based on the aggregation.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the first reference device and the second reference device are access point (AP) devices.

11 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising determining the location of the first reference device based on phase differences of signals exchanged between the first reference device and the second reference device.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the location of the first reference device comprises comparing expected phase differences of signals to be received by the second reference device and measured phase differences of signals received by the second reference device.

13 . The method of claim 9 ,

wherein obtaining the first location estimate of the wireless device relative to the first reference coordinate system comprises determining the first location estimate relative to the first reference coordinate system based on signals received by the first reference device from the wireless device, and

wherein obtaining the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system defined by the second reference device comprises determining the second location estimate relative to the second reference coordinate system based on signals received by the second reference device from the wireless device.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein aggregating the first location estimate of the wireless device and the mapped second location estimate of the wireless device comprises averaging the first location estimate and the mapped second location estimate.

15 . The method of claim 9 ,

wherein mapping the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system comprises transforming the second location estimate of the wireless device to an equivalent position within the first reference coordinate system.

16 . Non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions that when executed cause processing circuitry to:

obtain a first location estimate of a wireless device relative to a first reference coordinate system defined by a first reference device and a second location estimate of the wireless device relative to a second reference coordinate system defined by a second wireless device;

map, based on a location of the second reference device relative to a location of the first reference device, the second location estimate of the wireless device relative to the second reference coordinate system to the first reference coordinate system;

aggregating the first location estimate of the wireless device and the mapped second location estimate of the wireless device; and

determining a location of the wireless device within the first reference coordinate system based on the aggregation.
