Abstract

A collection system configured to maintain the integrity of a bodily fluid sample has a proximal end portion, a distal end portion, and an inner surface defining a fluid flow path therethrough. The distal end portion is configured to be placed in fluid communication with a patient. The proximal end portion is configured to be placed in fluid communication with a fluid reservoir. The fluid flow path defined by the inner surface is associated with at least one flow characteristic configured to limit a stress within the flow of the bodily fluid between the distal end portion and the proximal end portion.

Claims (32)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . An apparatus for limiting stress in a flow of blood, the apparatus comprising:

a first port configured to be coupled to a first adapter that is in fluid communication with a patient;

a second port configured to be coupled to a second adapter that fluidically couples to a fluid reservoir;

a plurality of chambers disposed between the first port and the second port, an inner surface of each chamber having a continuous curvature, the plurality of chambers including a proximal chamber having a first volume, a distal chamber having a second volume greater than the first volume, and a medial chamber between the proximal chamber and the distal chamber, the medial chamber having a third volume greater than the second volume,

the plurality of chambers configured to (i) reduce a negative pressure within a portion of a flow path distal to the first port and (ii) facilitate a laminar flow of the blood through at least a portion of the flow path between the first port and the second port.

22 . The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the first port is configured to couple to a proximal portion of the first adapter, an inner diameter of the first port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the proximal portion of the first adapter.

23 . The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the second port is configured to couple to a distal portion of the second adapter, an inner diameter of the second port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the distal portion of the second adapter.

24 . The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein reducing the negative pressure within the portion of the flow path distal to the first port is operable to reduce damage to at least a portion of the blood flowing through the flow path between the first port and the second port.

25 . The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the plurality of chambers forms a set of semi-spherical portions of the apparatus.

26 . The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein a cross-sectional area of each chamber of the plurality of chambers varies between a smaller cross-sectional area and a larger cross-sectional area, the larger cross-sectional area associated with a center of each chamber from the plurality of chambers.

27 . An apparatus for limiting stress in a flow of blood, the apparatus comprising:

a first port configured to be coupled to a first adapter that is in fluid communication with a patient;

a second port configured to be coupled to a second adapter that fluidically couples to a fluid reservoir;

a plurality of chambers disposed between the first port and the second port, each chamber from the plurality of chambers defining an inner volume, a cross-sectional area of the inner volume of each chamber varying between a smaller cross-sectional area and a larger cross-sectional area with a continuous curvature based on a position along a longitudinal centerline of each chamber, the larger cross-sectional area associated with a center of each chamber from the plurality of chambers, the inner volume of the plurality of chambers varying along a longitudinal centerline between the first port and the second port,

the plurality of chambers configured to (i) reduce a negative pressure within a portion of a flow path distal to the first port and (ii) facilitate a laminar flow of the blood through at least a portion of the flow path between the first port and the second port.

28 . The apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the first port is configured to couple to a proximal portion of the first adapter, an inner diameter of the first port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the proximal portion of the first adapter.

29 . The apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the second port is configured to couple to a distal portion of the second adapter, an inner diameter of the second port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the distal portion of the second adapter.

30 . The apparatus of claim 27 , wherein reducing the negative pressure within the portion of the flow path distal to the first port is operable to reduce damage to at least a portion of the blood flowing through the flow path between the first port and the second port.

31 . The apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the plurality of chambers forms a set of semi-spherical portions of the apparatus.

32 . The apparatus of claim 27 , wherein the plurality of chambers includes a proximal chamber, a distal chamber, and a medial chamber, the medial chamber having an inner volume greater than an inner volume of the proximal chamber and the distal chamber.

33 . An apparatus for limiting stress in a flow of blood, the apparatus comprising:

a first port configured to be coupled to a first adapter that is in fluid communication with a patient;

a second port configured to be coupled to a second adapter that fluidically couples to a fluid reservoir;

a plurality of chambers disposed between the first port and the second port, an inner surface of each chamber having a continuous curvature that varies in cross-sectional area along a longitudinal centerline, the plurality of chambers including a proximal chamber having a first maximum cross-sectional area, a distal chamber having a second maximum cross-sectional area greater than the first maximum cross-sectional area, and a medial chamber between the proximal chamber and the distal chamber, the medial chamber having a third maximum cross-sectional area greater than the second maximum cross-sectional area.

34 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the plurality of chambers is configured to reduce a negative pressure within a portion of a flow path distal to the first port, thereby reducing hemolysis of the flow of blood conveyed from the second port to the second adapter.

35 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the first port is configured to couple to a proximal portion of the first adapter, an inner diameter of the first port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the proximal portion of the first adapter.

36 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the second port is configured to couple to a distal portion of the second adapter, an inner diameter of the second port is substantially equal to a diameter of a lumen extending through at least the distal portion of the second adapter.

37 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein reducing the negative pressure within the portion of the flow path distal to the first port is operable to reduce damage to at least a portion of the blood flowing through the flow path between the first port and the second port.

38 . The apparatus of claim 33 , wherein the plurality of chambers forms a set of semi-spherical portions of the apparatus.
