Abstract

A powered surgical tool system. The system includes a handpiece having a motor and a front end attachment removably coupled to the handpiece. The attachment has a nose defining a bore for receiving a shaft of a cutting accessory connectable to a motor of the powered surgical tool for rotation. The nose also defines an enclosed channel separate from the bore. The channel extends longitudinally and helically along the nose such that the enclosed channel curves around the nose to curve around the bore. The channel has a variable pitch as the enclosed channel extends longitudinally. An irrigation fitting is in fluid communication with the enclosed channel in the nose and is adapted to receive an irrigating fluid and flow the fluid through the enclosed channel.

Claims (38)

1 . A powered surgical tool system comprising:

a handpiece having a motor; and

a front end attachment configured to be removably coupled to the handpiece, the front end attachment comprising,

a nose defining:

a bore for receiving a shaft of a cutting accessory connectable to a motor of the powered surgical tool system for rotation thereby, and

an enclosed channel separate from the bore, the enclosed channel extending longitudinally and helically along the nose such that, as the enclosed channel extends longitudinally, the enclosed channel curves around the nose so as to curve around the bore, and the enclosed channel having a variable pitch as the enclosed channel extends longitudinally, and

an irrigation fitting in fluid communication with the enclosed channel in the nose that is adapted to receive an irrigating fluid and flow the fluid through the enclosed channel.

2 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 1 , wherein the nose is further constructed so at least a section of the nose in which the enclosed channel is formed does not have any bearings in the bore.

3 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 1 , wherein:

a groove is formed in an outer surface of the nose; and

a shell is disposed over the outer surface of the nose so as to extend over and enclose the groove so that portions of the nose that define the groove and the shell collectively define the enclosed channel.

4 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 3 , wherein the shell comprises a heat shrink tubing.

5 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 1 , wherein:

the nose is further formed so as to have an outlet opening adjacent a distal end of the nose; and

the enclosed channel is in fluid connection with the outlet opening in the nose.

6 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 1 , wherein the front end attachment further comprises a cap forming a housing for attaching the nose to the handpiece of the powered surgical tool system.

7 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 6 , wherein the cap is separate from the nose.

8 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 1 , wherein the front end attachment further comprises a cutting accessory rotatably disposed within the bore of the nose.

9 . The powered surgical tool system of claim 8 , wherein the cutting accessory comprises an accessory shaft that is flexible.

The powered surgical tool system of claim 9 , further comprising an attachment drive shaft to transfer a rotational moment to the accessory shaft, wherein the attachment drive shaft is configured to be coupled to and receive the rotational moment from the motor of the powered surgical tool system.

11 . A front end attachment for a powered surgical tool, the front end attachment comprising:

a nose that extends forward from a proximal end of the nose, the nose defining:

a bore for receiving a shaft of a cutting accessory connectable to a motor of the powered surgical tool for rotation thereby, and

an enclosed channel separate from the bore, the enclosed channel extending longitudinally and helically along the nose such that, as the enclosed channel extends longitudinally, the enclosed channel curves around the nose so as to curve around the bore, and the enclosed channel having a variable pitch as the enclosed channel extends longitudinally; and

an irrigation fitting in fluid communication with the enclosed channel in the nose that is adapted to receive an irrigating fluid and flow the fluid through the enclosed channel.

12 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , wherein the nose is further constructed so at least a section of the nose in which the enclosed channel is formed does not have any bearings in the bore.

13 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , wherein:

a groove is formed in an outer surface of the nose; and

a shell is disposed over the outer surface of the nose so as to extend over and enclose the groove so that portions of the nose that define the groove and the shell collectively define the enclosed channel.

14 . The front end attachment of claim 13 , wherein the shell comprises a heat shrink tubing.

15 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , wherein:

the nose is further formed so as to have an outlet opening adjacent a distal end of the nose; and

the enclosed channel is in fluid connection with the outlet opening in the nose.

16 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , further comprising a cap forming a housing for attaching the nose to a handpiece of the powered surgical tool.

17 . The front end attachment of claim 16 , wherein the cap is separate from the nose.

18 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , further comprising a cutting accessory rotatably disposed within the bore of the nose.

19 . The front end attachment of claim 18 , wherein the cutting accessory comprises an accessory shaft that is flexible.

20 . The front end attachment of claim 11 , wherein the nose comprises a single piece component.
