Abstract

Performing disaster recovery in a cloud-based storage system, including: creating, by a storage system a snapshot of a dataset; uploading, from the storage system to a cloud computing environment, the snapshot; storing, by the cloud computing environment, the snapshot; detecting, by the cloud computing environment, that the dataset is not available on the storage system; and creating, by the cloud computing environment using the snapshot that is stored within the cloud computing environment, a cloud-based storage system that includes the dataset.

Claims (30)

1 . A method comprising:

instantiating a virtual storage system utilizing resources of a cloud computing platform; and

copying one or more portions of a dataset stored by an external storage system into local instance stores of at least one virtual server operating in support of the virtual storage system, wherein the copied one or more portions are usable to recreate the dataset.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one virtual server executes a virtual storage controller application.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising instantiating, by the cloud computing platform, the virtual storage system in response to a change in availability of the dataset at the external storage system.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein instantiating the virtual storage system includes instantiating the virtual storage system using a block storage service.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein populating storage of the virtual storage system includes populating one or more storage instances associated with the at least one virtual server with portions of the dataset.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more storage instances include block storage, and wherein the external storage system stores the dataset using object storage.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the cloud computing platform provides the virtual storage system access to file storage.

8 . A system for performing disaster recovery to a cloud-based storage system, the system comprising a computer processor, a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer memory having disposed within it computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, cause the system to carry out the steps of:

instantiating a virtual storage system utilizing resources of a cloud computing platform; and

copying one or more portions of a dataset stored by an external storage system into local instance stores of at least one virtual server operating in support of the virtual storage system, wherein the copied one or more portions are usable to recreate the dataset.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one virtual server executes a virtual storage controller application.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the system to carry out the steps of:

instantiating, by the cloud computing platform, the virtual storage system in response to a change in availability of the dataset at the external storage system.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the instructions for instantiating the virtual storage system further comprise instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the system to carry out the steps of:

instantiating the virtual storage system using a block storage service.

12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions for populating storage of the virtual storage system further comprise instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the system to carry out the steps of populating one or more storage instances associated with the at least one virtual server with portions of the dataset.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more storage instances include block storage, and wherein the external storage system stores the dataset using object storage.

14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the cloud computing platform provides the virtual storage system access to file storage.

15 . A computer program product disposed on a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer readable medium comprising computer program instructions that, when executed by a computer processor, to carry out the steps of:

instantiating a virtual storage system utilizing resources of a cloud computing platform; and

copying one or more portions of a dataset stored by an external storage system into local instance stores of at least one virtual server operating in support of the virtual storage system, wherein the copied one or more portions are usable to recreate the dataset.

16 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the at least one virtual server executes a virtual storage controller application.

17 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the computer processor to carry out the steps of:

instantiating, by the cloud computing platform, the virtual storage system in response to a change in availability of the dataset at the external storage system.

18 . The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the instructions for instantiating the virtual storage system further comprise instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the computer processor to carry out the steps of:

instantiating the virtual storage system using a block storage service.

19 . The computer program product of claim 15 , wherein the instructions for populating storage of the virtual storage system further comprise instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, further cause the computer processor to carry out the steps of populating one or more storage instances associated with the at least one virtual server with portions of the dataset.

20 . The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein the one or more storage instances include block storage, and wherein the external storage system stores the dataset using object storage.
