Abstract

A downhole tool assembly includes a tubular having a turned-down region and a raised region extending axially away from the turned-down region. An inner diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region has a higher ellipticity than an outer diameter surface in the turned-down region. The outer diameter surface in the turned-down region defines a first center that is offset from a second center defined by the outer diameter surface of the tubular away from the turned-down region. The downhole tool assembly also includes a cylindrical tool disposed at least partially in the turned-down region.

Claims (27)

1 . A downhole tool assembly, comprising:

a tubular comprising a turned-down region and a raised region extending axially away from the turned-down region,

wherein an inner diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region has a higher ellipticity than an outer diameter surface in the turned-down region, and wherein the outer diameter surface in the turned-down region defines a first center that is offset from a second center defined by the outer diameter surface of the tubular away from the turned-down region; and

a cylindrical tool disposed at least partially in the turned-down region.

2 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tubular comprises a casing joint for a casing string.

3 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first center is radially aligned with a third center defined by an inner diameter surface of the tubular.

4 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outer diameter surface along a portion of the tubular that is outside of the turned-down region has a higher ellipticity than the outer diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region.

5 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a stop feature positioned in the turned-down region, wherein the stop feature is configured to engage the cylindrical tool to limit an axial sliding motion thereof.

6 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the turned-down region extends to an axial end of the tubular.

7 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical tool comprises a centralizer.

8 . A downhole tool assembly, comprising:

a tubular comprising a turned-down region and a raised region extending axially away from the turned-down region, wherein an inner diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region has a higher ellipticity than an outer diameter surface in the turned-down region; and

a cylindrical tool disposed at least partially in the turned-down region, wherein a maximum diameter of the outer diameter surface is determined based upon a size of the cylindrical tool.

9 . The downhole tool of claim 8 , wherein the outer diameter surface in the turned-down region of the tubular is no larger than the maximum diameter, and a minimum thickness of the tubular is maintained.

10 . The downhole tool of claim 8 , wherein a first center defined by the outer diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region is radially offset from a second center defined by the outer diameter surface away from the turned-down region.

11 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a stop feature positioned in the turned-down region, wherein the stop feature is configured to engage the cylindrical tool to limit an axial sliding motion thereof.

12 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 11 , wherein the stop feature is part of the tubular, and the stop feature has an outer diameter greater than the outer diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region.

13 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 11 , wherein the stop feature has an outer diameter greater than the maximum diameter of the outer diameter surface.

14 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 8 , wherein the turned-down region extends to an axial end of the tubular.

15 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 8 , wherein the cylindrical tool comprises a centralizer.

16 . A downhole tool assembly, comprising:

a tubular comprising a turned-down region and a raised region extending axially away from the turned-down region, wherein an outer diameter surface in the raised region along a portion of the tubular has a higher ellipticity than the outer diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region; and

a cylindrical tool disposed at least partially in the turned-down region, wherein the cylindrical tool includes a plurality of ribs extending between a plurality of end collars.

17 . The downhole tool of claim 16 , wherein a first center defined by the outer diameter surface of the tubular in the turned-down region is radially offset from a second center defined by the outer diameter surface away from the turned-down region.

18 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 17 , wherein the first center is radially aligned with a third center defined by the inner diameter surface of the tubular.

19 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 17 , further comprising a stop feature positioned in the turned-down region, wherein the stop feature is configured to engage the plurality of end collars to limit an axial sliding motion of the cylindrical tool.

20 . The downhole tool assembly of claim 16 , wherein the tubular comprises a casing joint for a casing string.
