Abstract

The subject invention provides microbe-based products, as well as their use, for enhancing aquaculture. In particular, the subject invention provides materials and methods for producing healthy and high quality farmed fish by applying yeast and/or biosurfactant-based compositions to a fish farm. In one embodiment, the subject invention improves the environment in which the fish are farmed. In another embodiment, the subject invention provides a highly nutritious fish feed, as well as methods of feeding fish at low cost.

Claims (24)

1 . A composition for enhancing aquaculture, wherein said composition comprises a cultivated biosurfactant-producing yeast and a biosurfactant growth product of said yeast; wherein the biosurfactant-producing yeast is selected from Starmerella bombicola, Candida apicola, Pseudozyma aphidis, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Pichia guilliermondii , and Pichia occidentalis ; wherein said composition further comprises a fermentation broth in which the yeasts were cultivated; and wherein the biosurfactant is present in the fermentation broth.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the yeast is in an inactive form.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising fish food.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the biosurfactant is selected from glycolipids and lipopeptides.

5 . The composition of claim 4 , wherein the glycolipid is selected from sophorolipids, mannosylerythritol lipids, trehalose lipids and rhamnolipids.

6 . The composition of claim 4 , wherein the lipopeptides are selected from surfactin, iturin.

7 . A method of enhancing aquaculture, wherein said method comprises applying a composition of claim 1 to water of an aquaculture site.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the aquaculture site is a pond, raceway, aquarium, or tank.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the method improves the quality of the environment in which fish live.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the method removes slime, or pond scum, from a fish farm.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the method reduces hydrogen sulfide and/or carbon dioxide concentration in the water.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the method prevents or reduces infection of fish with pathogens.

13 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the method improves the health and/or quality of fish.

14 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the method improves nutrient absorption in the digestive tract of a fish.

15 . A method of feeding fish, wherein the method comprises applying a composition of claim 1 to water in which fish live, and allowing the fish to ingest the composition.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the composition is in the form of dry powder, meal, pellets, granules or flakes.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the method is used to supplement traditional fish feed.

18 . A method of reducing carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulfide in water of an aquarium or of a fish farm, wherein said method comprises applying a first yeast culture comprising cells of an inactivated Starmerella bombicola yeast and a sophorolipid (SLP) and a second yeast culture comprising cells of an inactivated Pseudozyma aphidis yeast and a mannosylerythritol lipid (MEL), to said water, wherein the first and second yeast cultures do not comprise live yeast cells;

wherein said reduction in carbon dioxide and/or hydrogen sulfide results in one or more of the following:

reduced carbon dioxide asphyxiation in fish living in the water;

reduced hydrogen sulfide toxicity in the fish; and/or

increased oxygen levels in the water.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the fish farm is a pond, raceway, or tank.

20 . The method of claim 18 , comprising measuring a level of hydrogen sulfide in the water.
