Abstract

A media device and methods that identify playback states reachable from a current content playback state and identify a reachable state that is likely to occur, are disclosed. A memory associated with the media device may receive frames that enable a smooth transition between the playback state and the reachable state. The media device may receive frames that correspond to points in the content that are separated by an amount of time that is proportional to the playback rate of the likely state. The frames may be frames corresponding to an image that may be played back at the playback rate of the likely state.

Claims (48)

1 . A method comprising:

generating for display a content item on a media device;

determining a probability of a possible next playing state for the content item associated with playing the content item at a particular rate;

based on the probability of the possible next playing state for the content item:

selecting a continuous segment of the content item at a first temporal position of the content item;

selecting a plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from a second temporal position of the content item different from the first temporal position, wherein each frame of the plurality of discontinuous frames is separated by a particular amount of time; and

storing, in a cache, the continuous segment and the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

based at least in part on the media device entering the possible next playing state, accessing at least one of the continuous segment or the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from the cache; and

causing display, at the media device, of the at least one of the continuous segment or the plurality of discontinuous frames accessed from the cache.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is faster than the current rate.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is slower than the current rate.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the possible next playing state is one of a reverse state or a forward state.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of discontinuous frames comprises at least one of key frames or differential frames.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the probability is based on at least one of: a playback location, metadata indicative of a usage pattern, or a proximity to a commercial in the content.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the continuous segment overlaps a current playback point of the content item.

9 . A system comprising:

a memory comprising a cache;

input/output circuitry configured to:

generate for display a content item on a media device;

processing circuitry configured to:

determine a probability of a possible next playing state for the content item associated with playing the content item at a particular rate;

based on the probability of the possible next playing state for the content item:

select a continuous segment of the content item at a first temporal position of the content item;

select a plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from a second temporal position of the content item different from the first temporal position, wherein each frame of the plurality of discontinuous frames is separated by a particular amount of time; and

store, in the cache, the continuous segment and the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

based at least in part on the media device entering the possible next playing state, accessing at least one of the continuous segment or the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from the cache; and

cause display, at the media device, of the at least one of the continuous segment or the plurality of discontinuous frames accessed from the cache.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is faster than the current rate.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is slower than the current rate.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the possible next playing state is one of a reverse state or a forward state.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of discontinuous frames comprises at least one of key frames or differential frames.

15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the probability is based on at least one of: a playback location, metadata indicative of a usage pattern, or a proximity to a commercial in the content.

16 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the continuous segment overlaps a current playback point of the content item.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that when executed by processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to:

generate for display a content item on a media device;

determine a probability of a possible next playing state for the content item associated with playing the content item at a particular rate;

based on the probability of the possible next playing state for the content item:

select a continuous segment of the content item at a first temporal position of the content item;

select a plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from a second temporal position of the content item different from the first temporal position, wherein each frame of the plurality of discontinuous frames is separated by a particular amount of time; and

store, in a cache, the continuous segment and the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising instructions that when executed by the processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to:

based at least in part on the media device entering the possible next playing state, request the continuous segment and the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item from the cache;

receive the continuous segment and the plurality of discontinuous frames of the content item; and

cause display, at the media device, of the content item in the possible next playing state.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is faster than the current rate.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the content item is playing in a current playing state associated with a current rate, and wherein the particular rate is slower than the current rate.
