Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatus are disclosed for improving medical procedures and medical procedure management, and, more particularly, for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure and assisting medical personnel throughout the procedure or at least at the conclusion of the procedure. In one form, an apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure is disclosed having a single camera for tracking movement and/or detecting position of a plurality of medical instruments during a medical procedure as at least one of the plurality of medical instruments is moved between multiple zones at least including a first prep zone and a second procedure zone. The apparatus having a controller connected to and collecting images from the camera, and a display in electrical communication with the controller and/or the camera for displaying medical instrument data pertaining to the movement and/or position of the plurality of medical instruments.

Claims (35)

1 .- 13 . (canceled)

14 . An apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure comprising:

a camera configured to capture images of a procedure area throughout the procedure that includes a plurality of medical instruments disposed therein;

a controller in electrical communication with the camera, the controller configured to monitor a respective location of the plurality of medical instruments based on the captured images and determine if one or more of the plurality of medical instruments are missing;

a display in electrical communication with the controller and/or the camera configured to display medical instrument data pertaining to the movement and/or position of the plurality of medical instruments;

the controller configured to provide an alert when the controller identifies a missing one or more of the plurality of medical instruments; and

an illuminator in electrical communication with the controller and/or display configured to project a beam of light to a last known location of the missing one or more of the plurality of medical instruments.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the apparatus includes a first button for actuating the illuminator and a second button for suspending or delaying the alert.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the apparatus includes at least one graphical user interface located on the display, the graphical user interface including at least two touchscreen buttons for actuating the illuminator and for suspending or delaying the alert.

17 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the display is configured to display additional information regarding the missing one or more of the plurality of medical instruments, the additional information including at least one of a medical instrument position, location, velocity or speed of travel, vector or direction of travel, telemetry and instrument marker data.

18 . The apparatus of claim 14 , configured such that an operator may display an image or video of the procedure area at or near a time when the one or more plurality of medical instruments went missing.

19 . The apparatus of claim 14 , the alert including an announcement of a name of the missing medical instrument.

20 . The apparatus of claim 14 , the alert including at least one of an audible alarm, a visual alarm and/or a haptic alarm.

21 . The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein each of the plurality of medical instruments has an instrument marker and the controller is configured to determine at least two of an x coordinate, a y coordinate and/or a z coordinate of the respective medical instrument within the procedure area.

22 . An apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure comprising:

a camera configured to capture sequential images of a plurality of medical instruments moved within a procedure area during the length of the procedure;

a controller in electrical communication with the camera, the controller configured to continuously monitor a position and a movement of the plurality of medical instruments from the captured images and detected when one or more of the plurality of instruments meets a predetermined condition associated with the procedure;

a display in electrical communication with the controller and/or the camera configured to display medical instrument data pertaining to the movement and/or position of the plurality of medical instruments;

the controller configured to provide an alert indicating information indicating satisfaction of the predetermined condition; and

wherein the display is configured to display additional information related to the one or more of the plurality of medical instrument meeting the predetermined condition, the additional information including at least one of a medical instrument position, location, velocity or speed of travel, vector or direction of travel, telemetry and/or instrument marker data.

23 . The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the predetermined condition includes at least one of the following:

at least one of the medical instruments is detected in an undesirable location within the procedure area;

at least one of the medical instruments is detected in an undesirable location for too long of a period;

at least one of the medical instruments is moved out of a predetermined order established for the medical procedure involved; and/or

at least one of the medical instruments is moved out of a predetermined order established for the medical personnel involved.

24 . The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the predetermined condition is based on the medical procedure being performed.

25 . The apparatus of claim 22 , the alert including an announcement of a name of the one or more of the plurality of instruments met the predetermined condition.

26 . The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein each of the plurality of medical instruments has an instrument marker and the controller is configured to determine at least two of an x coordinate, a y coordinate and/or a z coordinate of the respective medical instrument within the procedure area.

27 . The apparatus of claim 22 , configured such that an operator may display an image or video of the procedure area at or near a time when the one or more of the plurality of instruments met the predetermined condition.

28 . An apparatus for tracking medical instruments throughout a procedure comprising:

a medical tracking device having a camera, a display, an illuminator and a control circuit with a non-transitory computer readable memory storing a set of instructions executable by the control circuit and configured to cause the control circuit to perform the steps of:

continuously tracking via the camera a plurality of medical instruments disposed within a procedure area, each of the plurality of medical instruments including a different respective machine readable instrument marker disposed thereon;

updating the display with a location of the plurality of medical instruments within the procedure area using the machine readable instrument marker disposed on each respective one of the plurality of medical instruments;

identifying one or more of the plurality of medical instruments as a missing medical instrument when the medical tracking device fails to detect the respective location of the missing medical instrument within the procedure area; and

triggering an alarm and projecting a beam of light from the illuminator towards a last known location of the missing medical instrument within the procedure area.
