Abstract

Foam compositions are provided. The compositions are prepared from multi-functional acetoacetate esters and multi-functional amines or acrylates. The foam compositions can include one or more additives. The foam compositions can be used for home and commercial insulation, air sealing sound proofing, structural improvement, and exterior roofing, among other applications. The foam compositions provide advantages of being isocyanate free and offer reduced exposure to isocyanate.

Claims (21)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method of making a foam composition, the method comprising:

(i) providing a multi-functional acetoacetate ester in a first container;

(ii) providing a multi-functional amine in a second container coupled;

(iii) electrically or hydraulically pumping the multi-functional acetoacetate ester from the first container into a mix chamber at a pressure of from 500 to 2000 psi;

(iv) pumping the multi-functional amine from the second container into the mix chamber at a pressure of from 500 to 2000 psi; and

(v) allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber, where the reaction product is disposed on a roof surface.

22 . The method of claim 21 , where said step (v) of allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber takes place in the presence of a blowing agent selected from the group consisting of a pentane or a halogenated alkene.

23 . The method of claim 21 , where said step (v) of allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber takes place in the presence of a surfactant.

24 . The method of claim 21 , where said step (v) of allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber takes place in the presence of a flame retardant.

25 . The method of claim 21 , where said step (v) of allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber takes place in the presence of a catalyst.

26 . The method of claim 21 , where the multi-functional amine is a diamine.

27 . The method of claim 26 , where the multi-functional acetoacetate ester is an alkyl triol trisacetoacetate.

28 . The method of claim 27 , where the alkyl triol trisacetoacetate is trimethylol propane triacetoacetate.

29 . The method of claim 21 , where said step of electrically or hydraulically pumping the multi-functional acetoacetate ester from the first container into a mix chamber and said step of pumping the multi-functional amine from the second container into the mix chamber takes place at a pressure of from 900 to 1200 psi.

30 . The method of claim 21 , where the inert blowing agent has a gas-phase thermal conductivity of less than or equal to 0.016 W/m·k.

31 . The method of claim 21 , where said method produces a foam having a density of less than or equal to 10 lbs/ft 3 .

32 . The method of claim 21 , where said method produces a foam having a density of less than or equal to 3.5 lbs/ft 3 .

33 . The method of claim 21 , where said method produces a foam having a density of less than or equal to 2.5 lbs/ft 3 .

34 . The method of claim 21 , where said reaction product is expelled from said mixing chamber through a nozzle or orifice.

35 . The method of claim 21 , wherein water produced as a consequence of allowing the multi-functional acetoacetate ester and the multi-functional amine to form a reaction product within the mix chamber acts as a chemical blowing agent.
