Abstract

An embolic material blocking catheter includes a handle assembly, an elongated element having a lumen, and a deployable embolic material blocking element. The embolic material blocking catheter is configured to accommodate insertion of a treatment catheter into the lumen to position a treatment device distal to the embolic material blocking element for administering a treatment at a treatment site and/or convey embolic material blocked by the embolic material blocking element for extraction from the patient.

Claims (32)

1 . A method of filtering embolic material out of a flow of blood within a blood vessel of a patient's vasculature, the method comprising:

advancing an embolic material blocking catheter within the patient's vasculature to position an embolic material filter of the embolic material blocking catheter for deployment within the blood vessel;

reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to deploy the embolic material filter from a collapsed insertion configuration to an expanded deployed configuration in which the embolic material filter is interfaced with the blood vessel;

filtering embolic material out of the flow of blood within the blood vessel by the embolic material filter;

operating an embolic material extraction device to remove embolic material filtered out of the flow of blood by the embolic material filter from the patient's vasculature through a lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter;

reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to reconfigure the embolic material filter from the expanded deployed configuration to a collapsed captured configuration; and

removing the embolic material blocking catheter from the patient's vasculature via retraction through the patient's vasculature.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the operating the embolic material extraction device occurs while the embolic material filter is in the expanded deployed configuration.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the embolic material blocking element, in the expanded deployed configuration, extends downstream from an outer circumference of the embolic material filter to an inner circumference of the embolic material filter so as to guide at least some of the embolic material into the lumen.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the embolic material blocking catheter comprises a handle assembly that comprises an embolic material extraction port in fluid communication with the lumen; and

the embolic material extraction device is operatively coupled with the embolic material extraction port.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to deploy the embolic material filter comprises proximally retracting a retaining sheath of the embolic material blocking catheter to release the embolic material filter from constraint imposed by the retaining sheath.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to reconfigure the embolic material filter from the expanded deployed configuration to a collapsed captured configuration comprises distally advancing the retaining sheath to capture the embolic material filter within the retaining sheath.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

advancing a guide wire through the patient's vasculature and into the blood vessel; and

advancing an introducer over the guide wire,

and wherein advancing the embolic material blocking catheter within the patient's vasculature to position the embolic material filter of the embolic material blocking catheter for deployment within the blood vessel comprises advancing the embolic material blocking catheter over the introducer.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the embolic material blocking catheter comprises an insertion port through which each of the guide wire and the introducer extends.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the insertion port comprises a diaphragm valve configured to block escape of fluid from the lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter.

10 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising removing the introducer through the insertion port prior to reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to deploy the embolic material filter from the collapsed insertion configuration to the expanded deployed configuration.

11 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising distally advancing a treatment catheter through the insertion port and the lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter for treatment at a treatment site distal to the embolic material filter in the expanded deployed configuration.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising operating the treatment catheter to perform the treatment.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the treatment comprises implantation of a prosthetic heart valve.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising removing the treatment catheter through the insertion port and the lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter prior to reconfiguring the embolic material filter from the expanded deployed configuration to the collapsed captured configuration.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein reconfiguring the embolic material blocking catheter to deploy the embolic material filter from the collapsed insertion configuration to the expanded deployed configuration in which the embolic material filter is interfaced with the blood vessel comprises:

proximally retracting a retaining sheath of the embolic material blocking catheter to release the embolic material filter from constraint imposed by the retaining sheath to interface an outer circumferential portion of the embolic material filter with the blood vessel; and

proximally retracting an inner circumferential portion of the embolic material filter relative to the outer circumferential portion of the embolic material filter by proximally retracting an elongated main tube of the embolic material blocking catheter to shape the embolic material filter to guide captured embolic material toward the lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the inner circumferential portion of the embolic material filter is attached to an inner surface of the elongated main tube that defines the lumen of the embolic material blocking catheter.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the embolic material extraction device receives a flow of blood and embolic material filtered out of the flow of blood by the embolic material filter.

18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising separating, by the embolic material extraction device, blood from the flow of blood and embolic material.

19 . The method of claim 18 , further comprising reintroducing the blood separated from the flow of blood and embolic material back into the patient's vasculature.
