Abstract

The present disclosure relates to patient support systems, such as hospital beds, and particularly to reconfigurable patient support systems movable among a number of different positions. The present disclosure further relates to control algorithms and interfaces for use in patient support systems.

Claims (24)

1 . A patient support system comprising

a patient support apparatus including a seat-deck section and a head-deck section movable relative to the seat-deck section between a first position in which the head-deck section is lowered with a first end thereof adjacent to the seat-deck section and a second position in which the head-deck section is pivoted upwardly and the first end becomes further spaced apart from the seat-deck section so as to increase a gap defined between the seat-deck section and the head-deck section,

a support surface including a first plurality of therapy bladders having portions situated over the seat-deck section, a second plurality of therapy bladders situated over the head-deck section, and a fill bladder situated between the first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders, the first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders being cyclically inflatable and deflatable to provide a therapy to a patient support by the support surface,

an air source coupled to the fill bladder, the first plurality of therapy bladders, and the second plurality of therapy bladders, and

a controller coupled to the air source, the controller configured to inflate the fill bladder in response to movement of the head-deck section from the first position to the second position so that the fill bladder expands to increase coverage of the gap formed between the seat-deck section and the head-deck section.

2 . The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the therapy provided by cyclically inflating and deflating first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders comprises a lateral rotation therapy to laterally rotate the patient leftwardly and rightwardly.

3 . The patient support system of claim 2 , wherein the first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders are in a normally deflated state when the lateral rotation therapy is deactivated.

The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the support surface further includes a plurality of support bladders that overlie the first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders and wherein the plurality of support bladders are normally inflated regardless of whether the first plurality of therapy bladders, the second plurality of therapy bladders, and the fill bladder are inflated or deflated.

The patient support apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of support bladders includes a first group of support bladders that overlie the first plurality of therapy bladders and a second group of support bladders that overlie the second plurality of therapy bladders, wherein a space between the first group of support bladders and the second group of support bladders increases in response to the head-deck section being moved from the first position to the second position, and wherein the space is situated above the gap such that the fill bladder expands to occupy portions of the gap and the space when the head-deck section is in the second position.

6 . The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the support surface comprises a first foam section that underlies at least a portion of the first plurality of therapy bladders and a second foam section that underlies the second plurality of therapy bladders.

The patient support system of claim 6 , wherein a space between the first foam section and the second foam section increases in response to the head-deck section being moved from the first position to the second position, and wherein the space is situated below the gap such that the fill bladder expands to occupy portions of the gap and the space when the head-deck section is in the second position.

The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the support surface further includes a cover, the cover including a head-end section, a foot-end section, and expandable folds coupled between the head-end section and the foot-end, the expandable folds arranged over the interface of the seat-deck section and the head-deck section so that the cover extends over the gap formed between the seat-deck section and the head-deck section when the head-deck section is moved from the first position to the second position.

9 . The patient support system of claim 8 , wherein the support surface includes a plurality of lugs coupled to a bottom of the cover and configured to be received in lug-receiving apertures formed in the head-deck section to mount the support surface to the patient support apparatus.

10 . The patient support system of claim 9 , wherein each lug of the plurality of lugs include a stem and a ball, the ball spaced apart from the cover.

11 . The patient support system of claim 10 , wherein the lug-receiving apertures include at least one keyhole slot with a wide portion and a narrow portion.

12 . The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the support surface includes a low-air-loss topper that overlies the first plurality of therapy bladders, the second plurality of therapy bladders, and the fill bladder.

13 . The patient support system of claim 12 , wherein the support surface further includes a group of support bladders situated between the low-air-loss topper and the first and second plurality of therapy bladders.

14 . The patient support system of claim 12 , wherein the support surface further includes at least one percussion and vibration (P&V) bladder situated between the low-air-loss topper and a portion of the group of support bladders that overlies the second plurality of therapy bladders.

15 . The patient support system of claim 1 , further comprising a valve box situated inside the support surface and wherein the air source is coupled to the fill bladder, the first plurality of therapy bladders, and the second plurality of therapy bladders via the valve box.

16 . The patient support system of claim 15 , wherein the air source is situated outside of the support surface.

17 . The patient support system of claim 16 , further comprising pneumatic lines extending from the air source to the valve box and electrical lines extending from the controller to the valve box.

18 . The patient support system of claim 15 , wherein the valve box is situated in a head section of the support surface.

19 . The patient support system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to command the air source to actively deflate the fill bladder by vacuuming air from the fill bladder in response to movement of the head-deck section from the second position toward the first position.

20 . The patient support system of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to command the air source to actively deflate inflated bladders of the first plurality of therapy bladders and the second plurality of therapy bladders by vacuuming air therefrom.
