Abstract

An accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL) for implantation within a capsular bag of a patient's eye comprises first and second components coupled together to define an inner fluid chamber and an outer fluid reservoir. The inner region of the AIOL provides optical power with one or more of the shaped fluid within the inner fluid chamber or the shape of the first or second components. The fluid reservoir comprises a bellows region with fold(s) extending circumferentially around an optical axis of the eye. The bellows engages the lens capsule, and a compliant fold region between inner and outer bellows portions allows the profile of the AIOL to deflect when the eye accommodates for near vision. Fluid transfers between the inner fluid chamber and the outer fluid reservoir to provide optical power changes. A third lens component coupled to the first or second component provides additional optical power.

137 . An intraocular lens system, comprising:

a base structure comprising an optical component having a base optical power and a haptic structure extending from and around the optical component, wherein the haptic structure is configured to engage a native eye capsule of an eye of a subject; and

a fixed lens configured to be detachably coupled to the base structure when the base structure is operable and within the native eye capsule such that the fixed lens is anterior to the optical component along an optical axis,

wherein the fixed lens has a fixed optical power that is greater than the base optical power.

The system of claim 137 wherein the optical component is a first optical component and the base optical power is a first optical power, and wherein the base structure further comprises a second optical component coupled to the haptic structure and positioned posterior to the first optical component, the second optical component having a second optical power that is less than the fixed optical power.

139 . The system of claim 138 wherein the fixed optical power is greater than a combination of the first optical power and the second optical power.

140 . The system of claim 138 wherein the first optical component comprises a first membrane, the second optical component comprises a second membrane, and the first optical power and/or the second optical power are near zero.

141 . The system of claim 138 , further comprising:

an inner fluid chamber between the first and the second optical components; and

an outer fluid reservoir between inner and outer walls of the haptic structure, wherein the outer fluid reservoir is fluidically coupled to the inner fluid chamber such that a fluid within the base structure flows between the outer fluid reservoir and the inner fluid chamber to deflect the first optical component and/or the second optical component for providing accommodative optical power.

142 . The system of claim 141 wherein the fixed optical power is greater than the accommodative optical power.

143 . The system of claim 138 wherein the haptic structure surrounds the optical component and the fixed lens and forms substantially an entirety of an outer perimeter of the intraocular lens system.
