Abstract

Improved battery separators are disclosed herein for use in various lead acid batteries, and in particular lead acid battery strings. The improved separators, batteries, battery strings, methods, and vehicles disclosed herein provide substantially increased battery life, substantially reduced battery fail rate, and substantially higher voltage uniformity among the various batteries in a battery string. The improved battery strings may be advantageously employed in high depth of discharge applications such as electric bicycles, golf carts (or golf cars), uninterrupted power supply (UPS) backup power battery strings, and the like.

Claims (21)

. A composite battery separator, comprising a flat, ribbed, embossed, and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer and at least one layer comprising one or more fibrous materials.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the microporous polyolefin layer comprises one or more polyolefins and a filler.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the microporous polyolefin layer comprises polyethylene.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the fibrous material comprises glass fibers.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the fibrous material comprises polymeric fibers.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 1 , wherein the microporous polyolefin layer further comprises a surfactant or an additive.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 6 , wherein the surfactant comprises a non-ionic surfactant.

. The composite battery separator according to claim 7 , wherein the surfactant or additive is one that suppresses grid corrosion.

. The composite battery separator of claim 1 , wherein the separator comprises a flat, ribbed, embossed, and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer sandwiched between two AGM layers, wherein the AGM layers may have the same thickness or different thicknesses.

. The composite battery separator of claim 9 , wherein the AGM layers have the same thickness.

. The composite battery separator of claim 9 , wherein the AGM layers have different thicknesses.

. The composite battery separator of claim 9 , wherein the AGM layers have different thicknesses and a thickness of an AGM layer facing a negative electrode is 0.6 to 2.7 mm.

. The composite battery separator of claim 9 , wherein the AGM layers have different thickness and a thickness of the AGM layer facing a positive electrode is 0.75 to 3.3 mm.

. The composite battery separator of claim 1 , wherein the flat, ribbed, embossed, and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer has a thickness 0.025 to 0.6 mm.

. The composite battery separator of claim 14 , wherein the flat, ribbed, embossed and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer has a thickness of 0.1 to 0.2 mm.

. The composite battery separator of claim 1 , wherein acid filling channels exist on the ribbed, embossed, and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer, and the acid filling channels comprise fumed silica, a binder, or combinations thereof.

. The composite battery separator of claim 1 , wherein the ribbed, embossed, and/or textured microporous polyolefin layer comprises ribs, and the ribs are coated with a conductive material.

. The composite battery separator of claim 2 , wherein the filler is one or more selected from the group consisting of: silica, mica, montmorillonite, kaolinite, asbestos, talc, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite, natural and synthetic zeolites, cement, calcium silicate, clay, aluminum silicate, sodium aluminum silicate, aluminum polysilicate, alumina silica gels, glass particles, carbon black, activated carbon, carbon fibers, charcoal, graphite, titanium oxide, iron oxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide, lead oxide, tungsten, antimony oxide, zirconia, magnesia, alumina, molybdenum disulfide, zinc sulfide, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and combinations thereof.

. The composite battery separator of claim 18 , wherein the filler comprises silica.

. A composite battery separator, comprising a flat sheet microporous polyolefin layer and at least one layer comprising one or more fibrous materials.

. The composite battery separator of claim 20 , wherein the separator comprises a flat sheet microporous polyolefin layer sandwiched between two AGM layers, wherein the AGM layers may have the same thickness or different thicknesses.
