Abstract

A video encoder includes circuitry to generate an encoded bitstream for decoding by a compliant decoder, the encoded bitstream including a first picture to be used as a reference picture, a current picture comprising a first coded block and a second coded block, a signal indicating that a block-based mode when a reference picture and a current picture have different resolutions is enabled, and information including an index useful for determining a scaling constant. The compliant decoder has circuitry configured to receive the bitstream; determine whether the block-based mode is enabled, and if enabled utilizing the mode to reconstruct the first block and reconstruct the second block without using the mode.

Claims (25)

1 . A video encoder having circuitry to generate an encoded bitstream for decoding by a compliant decoder, the encoded bitstream including a first picture to be used as a reference picture, a current picture comprising a first coded block and a second coded block, a signal indicating that a block-based mode when a reference picture and a current picture have different resolutions is enabled, and information including an index useful for determining a scaling constant, decoder having circuitry configured to:

receive the bitstream;

determine whether the block-based mode is enabled, and if enabled utilizing the mode:

determine a scaling constant using the information in the bitstream including the index;

determine a prediction for the first block from the reference picture using the scaling constant and using a filter determined specifically for the prediction for the first block and not determined for the reference picture as a whole;

utilize the prediction to reconstruct the first block, and

without utilizing the mode, reconstruct the second block without using a prediction from a reference picture.

2 . The encoder of claim 1 wherein the second block is an intra-coded block.

3 . The encoder of claim 1 wherein the scaling constant is a vertical scaling constant.

4 . The encoder of claim 1 wherein the scaling constant is a horizontal scaling constant.

5 . A video encoder having circuitry to generate an encoded bitstream for decoding by a compliant decoder, the encoded bitstream including a first picture to be used as a reference picture, a current picture comprising a first inter-coded block and a second intra-coded block, a signal indicating that a block-based mode when a reference picture and a current picture have different resolutions is enabled, and information including an index useful for determining a scaling constant, the decoder having circuitry configured to:

receive the encoded bitstream;

determine whether the block-based mode is enabled, and if enabled utilizing the mode to:

determine a scaling constant using the information in the bitstream including the index;

determine a prediction for the first block from the reference picture using the scaling constant and using a filter determined specifically for the prediction for the first block and not determined for the reference picture as a whole;

utilize the prediction to reconstruct the first block, and

reconstruct the second block using intra-prediction.

6 . A method of transmitting image data via an encoded bitstream comprising:

applying image data to a video encoder generating an encoded bitstream including a first picture to be used as a reference picture, a current picture comprising a first coded block and a second coded block, a signal indicating that a block-based mode when a reference picture and a current picture have different resolutions is enabled, and information including an index useful for determining a scaling constant;

transmitting the encoded bitstream to a compliant decoder performing a decoding method comprising:

determining whether the block-based mode is enabled, and if enabled utilizing the mode:

determining a scaling constant using the information in the bitstream including the index;

determining a prediction for the first block from the reference picture using the scaling constant and using a filter determined specifically for the prediction for the first block and not determined for the reference picture as a whole;

utilizing the prediction to reconstruct the first block, and

without utilizing the mode, reconstruct the second block without using a prediction from a reference picture.
