Abstract

A filter cartridge for surgical gas delivery systems includes a filter housing configured to be seated in a filter cartridge interface of a surgical gas delivery system, with a plurality of flow paths defined through the filter housing including at least one evacuation/return flow path and at least one insufflation/sensing flow path. A humidity filter element is included in the evacuation/return flow path for removing humidity from an evacuation/return lumen of a tube set. The humidity filter element can include a sintered polymer material configured to provide tortuous flow paths therethrough to condense humidity out of a flow through the humidity filter element.

Claims (35)

1 . A filtered tube set comprising:

a) a filter cartridge having a cylindrical housing and defining a filtered inlet flow path and a filtered outlet flow path, wherein the filtered inlet low path includes a first pleated filter element and the filtered outlet flow path includes a second pleated filter element;

b) a first lumen extending from a front end of the filter cartridge and communicating with the filtered outlet flow path, wherein the first lumen has a first connector at a distal end thereof for connecting to a first surgical access device;

c) a second lumen extending from the front end of the filter cartridge and communicating with the filtered inlet flow path;

d) an in-line humidity filter assembly having a cylindrical housing containing a radially pleated humidity filter element and including an inlet fitting and an outlet fitting, wherein the outlet fitting communicates with a distal end of the second lumen; and

e) a third lumen extending from the inlet fitting and having a second connector at a distal end thereof for connecting to a second surgical access device.

2 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first lumen includes a first characteristic, wherein second lumen includes a second characteristic, and wherein the third lumen includes a third characteristic, wherein each of the first, second, and third characteristics indicate a characteristic of a fluid within the first, second, and third lumens.

3 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first characteristic is different than both of the second and third characteristics, and wherein the second characteristic is the same as the third characteristic.

4 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 3 , wherein the first characteristic includes a first color, and the second and third characteristics include a second color.

5 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 4 , wherein the first color indicates filtered fluid provided from the filter cartridge to the surgical access device.

6 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 5 , wherein the second color indicates unfiltered fluid returning from the surgical access device to the filter cartridge.

7 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 1 , wherein the in-line humidity filter housing further includes a filter cap at an inlet end of the in-line humidity filter housing.

8 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 7 , wherein the in-line humidity filter housing further includes potting disposed radially between the humidity filter element and the filter cap configured to seal the humidity filter element within the in-line humidity filter housing.

9 . A tube set assembly for surgical gas delivery systems comprising:

a filter cartridge with a filter housing configured to be seated in a filter cartridge interface of a surgical gas delivery system, with a plurality of flow paths defined through the filter housing including at least one filtered inlet flow path and at least one filtered outlet flow path;

a tube set including a first lumen in fluid communication with the filtered outlet flow path extending from a front end of the filter cartridge, a second lumen in fluid communication with the filtered inlet flow path extending from the front end of the filter cartridge, and a third lumen;

an in-line humidity filter assembly having a cylindrical housing containing a radially pleated humidity filter element and including an inlet fitting and an outlet fitting, wherein the outlet fitting communicates with a distal end of the second lumen, the third lumen extending from the inlet fitting and having a second connector at a distal end thereof for connecting to a second surgical access device; and

a humidity filter element seated in the humidity filter housing for removing humidity from the first lumen of the tube set.

10 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 8 , wherein the first lumen includes a first characteristic configured to indicate, wherein second lumen includes a second characteristic, and wherein the third lumen includes a third characteristic, wherein each of the first, second, and third characteristics indicate a characteristic of a fluid within the first, second, and third lumens.

11 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 10 , wherein the first characteristic is different than both of the second and third characteristics, and wherein the second characteristic is the same as the third characteristic.

12 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 11 , wherein the first characteristic includes a first color, and the second and third characteristics include a second color.

13 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 12 , wherein the first color indicates filtered fluid provided from the filter cartridge to the surgical access device.

14 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 13 , wherein the second color indicates unfiltered fluid returning from the surgical access device to the filter cartridge.

15 . A filtered tube set comprising:

a) a filter cartridge assembly having a housing that includes a first filtered flow path, a second filtered flow path and a third filtered flow path;

b) a first lumen extending from the housing of the filer cartridge assembly and communicating with the first filtered flow path;

c) a second lumen extending from the housing of the filter cartridge and communicating with the second filtered flow path;

d) a third lumen extending from the housing of the filter cartridge and communicating with the third filtered flow path;

e) an in-line filter assembly operatively associated with one of the first, second or third lumens; and

f) a tri-lumen bulls-eye connector operatively associated with a distal end of the first, second and third lumens for connecting the tube set to a surgical access device.

16 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 15 , wherein the in-line filter assembly includes a housing containing pleated filter element.

17 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 15 , wherein the lumen associated with the in-line filter assembly is a distinct color from the other two lumens.

18 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 17 , wherein the lumen associated with the in-line filter assembly includes a first portion extending between the filter cartridge assembly and the in-line filter assembly and a second portion extending between the filter cartridge assembly and the tri-lumen bulls-eye connector.

19 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 15 , wherein the lumen that is associated with the in-line filter assembly is a gas return path from the surgical access device.

20 . The filtered tube set as recited in claim 15 , wherein the two lumens that are not associated with the in-line filter assembly are gas delivery paths to the surgical access device.
