Abstract

Processes for converting one or more C 1 -C 5 linear or branched alcohols to one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins are provided. In one exemplary embodiment, the process can be a single stage process for the direct conversion of C 1 -C 5 alcohols to olefinic mixtures (e.g., C 2 -C 5 ) carried out in a reactor using a catalyst that includes zeolite doped with boron and phosphor. Systems for carrying out these processes are also provided.

Claims (27)

1 .- 26 . (canceled)

27 . A process for converting one or more C 1 -C 5 linear or branched alcohols to one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins, the process comprising:

contacting an input stream comprising the one or more C 1 -C 5 linear or branched alcohols with at least a first catalyst and a second catalyst in a reactor to form an output stream comprising the one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins, the reactor being at a temperature from about 350° C. to about 750° C., a gauge pressure from 0 to about 30 bar, and a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) from about 0.5 to about 5.0, wherein the reactor is a single bed reactor or a stacked bed reactor;

wherein the first catalyst comprises a doped or undoped alumina catalyst to form a first mixture, the doped alumina catalyst optionally comprising, in neutral or ionic form, one or more of zirconium (Zr), titanium (Ti), tungsten (W), or silicon (Si); and

wherein the second catalyst comprises a doped or undoped zeolite catalyst.

28 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the single bed reactor is a fixed bed reactor or a fluidized bed reactor.

29 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the stacked bed reactor is a fixed bed reactor or a fluidized bed reactor.

30 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the one or more C 1 -C 5 linear or branched alcohols are bio-based and produced by fermentative processes.

31 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the one or more C 1 -C 5 linear or branched alcohols are not derived from petroleum.

32 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins are present in the output stream in an amount that is at least 80 wt. %.

33 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the output stream comprises one or more aromatic (C 7+ ) compounds in an amount from about 2 wt. % to about 10 wt. %.

34 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the process further comprises removing at least a portion of C 2 olefins, C 4 olefins, C 5 olefins, or any combination thereof from the output stream.

35 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the temperature is from about 550° C. to about 750° C.

36 . The process of claim 27 , wherein the WHSV is from about 0.5 to about 5.0.

37 . A process for converting methanol to one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins, the process comprising:

contacting an input stream comprising the methanol with at least a first catalyst and a second catalyst in a reactor to form an output stream comprising the one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins, the reactor being at a temperature from about 350° C. to about 750° C., a gauge pressure from 0 to about 30 bar, and a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) from about 0.5 to about 5.0, wherein the reactor is a single bed reactor or a stacked bed reactor;

wherein the first catalyst comprises a doped or undoped alumina catalyst, the doped alumina catalyst optionally comprising, in neutral or ionic form, one or more of zirconium (Zr), titanium (Ti), tungsten (W), or silicon (Si); and

wherein the second catalyst comprises a doped or undoped zeolite catalyst.

38 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the single bed reactor is a single fixed bed reactor or a fluidized bed reactor.

39 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the stacked bed reactor is a fixed bed reactor or a fluidized bed reactor.

40 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the methanol is bio-based and produced by fermentative processes.

41 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the methanol is not derived from petroleum.

42 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the one or more C 2 -C 5 olefins are present in the output stream in an amount that is at least 80 wt. %.

43 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the output stream comprises one or more aromatic (C 7+ ) compounds in an amount from about 2 wt. % to about 10 wt. %.

44 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the process further comprises removing at least a portion of C 2 olefins, C 4 olefins, C 5 olefins, or any combination thereof from the output stream.

45 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the temperature is from about 550° C. to about 750° C.

46 . The process of claim 37 , wherein the WHSV is from about 0.5 to about 5.0.
