Methods for rapid fault recovery of corrupted 5G/6G messages
View Patent ↗Message faulting is an expensive problem for 5G and especially for 6G due to increased pathloss and network faulting. Current message correction procedures rely on bulky FEC codes or automatic retransmission requests, further burdening the network. Disclosed are methods for a receiver to recognize a faulted message, identify the faulted message elements, and determine the corrected value for each fault, thereby recovering the correct message without a retransmission. Autonomous error correction within a receiver can be performed without network assistance or standards because the receiver has enough data, in the form of the received waveforms and the included error-detection code (usually just 16 bits) to find the corrected version internally. Reduced dependence on retransmissions and multiple code transmissions will alleviate network crowding while preserving the desired reliability and latency goals of the recipient.
1 . A method for a receiver to correct a faulted message, the method comprising:
a) receiving the faulted message comprising message elements, each message element occupying one resource element of a resource grid, each message element and comprising a waveform signal;
b) receiving an error-detection code associated with the faulted message;
c) for each particular message element:
i) determining, according to the waveform signal of the particular message element, a modulation parameter;
ii) determining a deviation of the particular message element comprising a difference between the modulation parameter of the particular message element and an average value, the average value comprising an average of the waveform signals of a plurality of message elements; and
iii) determining that the particular message element is likely faulted when the deviation of the particular message element exceeds a predetermined threshold.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the faulted message is received according to 5G or 6G technologies.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the faulted message is modulated according to a quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulation scheme comprising two orthogonal components of each waveform signal, the orthogonal components comprising an I-branch component and an orthogonal Q-branch component, the I-branch and Q-branch components being amplitude modulated according to predetermined amplitude levels.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the modulation parameter comprises an amplitude of an I-branch component or an amplitude of a Q-branch component.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the average value comprises an average of the I-branch component amplitudes, or the Q-branch component amplitudes, or both the I-branch and Q-branch component amplitudes, of the plurality of message elements.

The method of claim 1 , wherein each waveform signal of the faulted message is modulated according to an amplitude-phase modulation scheme comprising amplitude modulation multiplexed with phase modulation, the amplitude modulation according to predetermined amplitude levels and the phase modulation according to predetermined phase levels.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the modulation parameter of the particular message element comprises the amplitude of the waveform signal of the particular message element, and the average value comprises an average of the amplitudes of the waveform signals of the plurality of message elements.
8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the modulation parameter of the particular message element comprises the phase of the waveform signal of the particular message element, and the average value comprises an average of the phases of the waveform signals of the plurality of message elements.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined value comprises a predetermined amplitude value or a predetermined phase value.
10 . A method for a wireless receiver to improve communication reliability, the method comprising:
a) receiving a message and an associated error-detection code, the message and the error-detection code comprising resource elements, each resource element comprising a modulated waveform signal modulated according to an allowed modulation state of a modulation scheme;
b) for each particular resource element of the message and the error-detection code:
i) demodulating the particular resource element by selecting a closest modulation state of the allowed modulation states; and
ii) measuring a parameter of the waveform signal, and determining a quality factor according to the measured parameter of the waveform signal;
c) comparing the message, or a hash or digest thereof, to the error-detection code; and
d) determining that the message or the error-detection code is corrupted.
11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:
a) determining a lowest quality factor of the quality factors of the message and the error-detection code; and
b) determining whether the lowest quality factor is in the message or the error-detection code.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising, when the lowest quality factor is in the message:
a) calculating, according to the error-detection code, a corrected modulation state; and
b) assigning the corrected modulation state to the resource element having the lowest quality factor.
13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising, when the lowest quality factor is in the error-detection code:
a) indicating that the message is likely not corrupted.
14 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:
a) determining a number of resource elements of the message that have quality factors below a predetermined threshold; and
b) when the number exceeds a predetermined limit, requesting a retransmission of the message.
15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:
a) determining that the number is less than the predetermined limit;
b) for each resource element wherein the quality factor is below the predetermined threshold, sequentially altering the modulation state to each of the allowed modulation states, in a nested grid search; and
c) testing each alteration by comparing the message, including the altered resource elements, to the error-detection code.
16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising:
a) when one of the alterations causes the message, including the altered resource elements, to agree with the error-detection code, indicating that the message has been corrected; and
b) when none of the alterations causes the message, including the altered resource elements, to agree with the error-detection code, requesting a retransmission of the message.
17 . A method for a wireless receiver to recover a corrupted message, the method comprising:
a) receiving a message and an error-detection code associated with the message, the message and the error detection code comprising message elements, each message element comprising a resource element of a resource grid, each message element further comprising a waveform signal, the waveform signal modulated according to a modulation scheme comprising a plurality of predetermined modulation levels;
b) demodulating the message by comparing a modulation parameter of each message element to the plurality of predetermined modulation levels and selecting a closest modulation level of the plurality; and
c) determining, according to the error-detection code, that the message is corrupted.
18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:
a) determining, according to the error-detection code, a corrected version of the message; and
b) indicating that the message has been corrected.
19 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:
a) determining a modulation quality of each message element, of the message and the error-detection code, wherein the modulation quality is inversely related to a difference between the modulation parameter and a closest modulation level of the plurality; and
b) counting a first number of message elements of the message having a modulation quality below a predetermined threshold, and a second number of message elements of the error-detection code having a modulation quality below the predetermined threshold.
20 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:
a) when the third number exceeds zero, requesting a retransmission of the message.
