Abstract

Method for manufacturing a carpet or a rug, comprising the following steps: the step (S 1 -S 2 ) of providing a primary backing ( 1 ), being a woven or non-woven layer comprising filaments ( 2 ) of polyethyleneterephthalate and copolymer of polyethyleneterephthalate, the coPET having a lower melting temperature than the PET and wherein said PET is available in said primary backing ( 1 ) in a higher amount than said coPET; the step of providing a glue layer ( 11 ) consisting for 50% or more out of coPET; the step of tufting yarn at least into said primary backing ( 1 ); the step of activating said glue layer ( 11 ) at least for partially fixing said yarn ( 12 ) on said primary backing ( 1 ). The invention also concerns carpets ( 16 ) and rugs that are obtained or obtainable by means of such method.

Claims (37)

1 - 54 . (canceled)

55 . A carpet or rug, comprising:

a primary backing and a pile;

wherein the primary backing comprises:

a woven or nonwoven fabric sheet comprising continuous bicomponent filaments having a core comprising polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and a sheath comprising copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate (coPET), and

an activated glue layer comprising continuous bicomponent filaments having a core comprising PET and a sheath comprising coPET, having a ratio of PET/coPET of between about 20/80 and 80/20 by weight;

wherein the fabric sheet and the activated glue layer are secured to each other and wherein the PET in the primary backing is present in an amount of more than 50 percent by weight; and

the pile comprises yarn tufted through the primary backing.

56 . The carpet or rug according to claim 55 , wherein the carpet or rug further comprises a secondary backing layer.

57 . The carpet or rug according to claim 56 , wherein the secondary backing layer comprises an unsolid layer comprising a material selected from the group consisting of PET, coPET, or a combination thereof.

58 . The carpet or rug according to claim 57 , wherein the unsolid layer comprises foam and has internal cavities.

59 . The carpet or rug according to claim 55 , wherein the bicomponent filaments in the activated glue layer are round.

60 . The carpet or rug according to claim 55 , wherein the bicomponent filaments in the activated glue layer are lobal.

61 . The carpet or rug according to claim 60 , wherein the bicomponent filaments in the activated glue layer are trilobal and wherein all of the lobes are comprised of coPET.

62 . The carpet or rug of claim 55 , wherein the activated glue layer comprises woven or nonwoven filaments.

63 . The carpet or rug of claim 55 , wherein the yarn comprises PET.

64 . A carpet or rug, comprising:

a primary backing comprising a woven or nonwoven fabric made of continuous bicomponent filaments having a core comprising polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and a sheath comprising copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate (coPET);

an activated glue layer comprising bicomponent filaments having a core comprising PET and a sheath comprising coPET, having a ratio of PET/coPET of between about 20/80 and 80/20 by weight; and

a pile;

wherein the amount of PET in the combined primary backing and activated glue layer is greater than 50 percent by weight.

65 . The carpet or rug of claim 64 , wherein the bicomponent filaments in the activated glue layer comprise continuous filaments or staple fibers.

66 . The carpet or rug of claim 65 , wherein the bicomponent filaments are trilobal.

67 . The carpet or rug of claim 66 , wherein the activated glue layer is a woven or nonwoven.

68 . The carpet or rug of claim 67 , wherein the activated glue layer comprises a filler.

69 . The carpet or rug of claim 68 , wherein the activated glue layer is at least 85 grams per square meter.

70 . The carpet or rug of claim 69 , wherein the continuous filaments in the primary backing are trilobal.

71 . The carpet or rug of claim 70 , wherein the weight of the primary backing is at least 100 grams per square meter.

72 . The carpet or rug of claim 71 , wherein the pile comprises yarn tufted through the primary backing.

73 . The carpet or rug of claim 72 , wherein the yarn comprises PET.

74 . A carpet or rug, comprising:

a web and a pile, wherein:

the web comprises a woven or nonwoven fabric sheet comprising bicomponent filaments having a core comprising polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and a sheath comprising copolymer of polyethylene terephthalate (coPET);

the web comprises a filler;

the amount of PET in the web is greater than 50% by weight;

a portion of the bicomponent filaments are fused to each other; and

the pile comprises yarn tufted through the web.
