Abstract

The disclosure concerns a communication system where adaptive antenna systems with algorithm are used to provide improved channel selection management in Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) and other multi-node communication systems. The adaptive antenna systems can be integrated into multiple nodes of a communication network, such as access points used in WLAN, and multiple radiation modes generated and tracked to determine optimal mode for access point to client communication links to assist in channel selection across the nodes in the network. Adaptive antenna system modes are selected and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is measured across available frequency channels to determine channels to assign per access point along with radiation modes to be implemented that results in improved SNR for the communication links established in the network.

Claims (37)

1 . A network controller for controlling wireless communication links between each of a plurality of client devices and a network, respectively, the network controller comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memory devices storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations, the operations comprising:

configuring a modal antenna of an access point in each of a plurality of modes, each mode of the plurality of modes having a distinct radiation pattern;

determining a channel quality indicator (CQI) for each mode of the plurality of modes, the CQI associated with each of the plurality of client devices and the modal antenna;

storing data indicative of the CQI for each of the plurality of modes;

determining one of the plurality of modes as a selected mode of operation for the modal antenna of the access point based at least in part on the data indicative of the CQI;

configuring the modal antenna in the selected mode of operation.

2 . The network controller of claim 1 , wherein the selected mode of operation is the one of the plurality of modes which achieves a greatest throughput of the network.

3 . The network controller of claim 2 , wherein the access point is a first access point, and wherein the greatest throughput of the network is achieved upon balancing device load among each of the first access point and a second access point.

4 . The network controller of claim 3 , wherein, when the modal antenna is configured in the selected mode of operation, a radiation pattern associated with the selected mode of operation is steered such that a null of the radiation pattern is pointed towards one or more of the plurality of client devices that is in communication with the second access point.

5 . The network controller of claim 3 , wherein a noise floor of the first access point is limited by one or more frequency components generated by the second access point.

6 . The network controller of claim 1 , wherein the CQI comprises one of:

a signal to interference noise ratio (SINR);

a receive signal strength indicator (RSSI); or

a modulation coding scheme (MCS).

7 . The network controller of claim 1 , wherein the computer-readable instructions comprise an algorithm executed by the network controller.

8 . A network controller for controlling wireless communication links between each of a plurality of client devices and a network, respectively, the network controller comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memory devices storing an algorithm for determining a selected mode of a modal antenna of a first access point for a given time period that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

surveying each of the plurality of client devices available for communication with the network;

configuring the modal antenna of the first access point in each of a plurality of antenna modes, each antenna mode having a distinct radiation pattern;

for each antenna mode:

measuring a channel quality indicator (CQI) associated with the modal antenna of the first access point and each of the plurality of client devices;

storing antenna mode data corresponding to each antenna mode, device, and CQI associated with the modal antenna of the first access point;

determining one of the plurality of antenna modes as the selected mode for the modal antenna of the first access point based at least in part on the antenna mode data; and

configuring the modal antenna of the first access point in the selected mode,

wherein the selected mode of the plurality of antenna modes improves a CQI at a second access point that is different from the first access point.

9 . The network controller of claim 8 , wherein the selected mode is the one of the plurality of antenna modes that achieves a greatest throughput of the network.

10 . The network controller of claim 9 , wherein the selected mode is the one of the plurality of antenna modes that achieves a prioritized throughput according to a network preference for individual device throughput.

11 . The network controller of claim 9 , wherein the greatest throughput of the network is achieved upon balancing device load among each of the first access point and the second access point.

12 . The network controller of claim 8 , wherein, when the modal antenna of the first access point is configured in the selected mode, a radiation pattern associated with the selected mode is steered such that a null of the radiation pattern is pointed towards one or more of the plurality of client devices that is in communication with the second access point.

13 . The network controller of claim 8 , wherein a noise floor of the first access point is limited by one or more frequency components generated by the second access point.

14 . The network controller of claim 8 , wherein the CQI comprises one of:
