Abstract

Land vehicles and methods of operating land vehicles are disclosed. A land vehicle includes a frame structure, a plurality of wheels, and a brake system. The frame structure includes a front cage that at least partially defines an operator cabin and a rear compartment positioned rearward of the front cage in a longitudinal direction. The plurality of wheels are supported by the frame structure. Each of plurality of wheels is sized to permit direct integration of an electric motor therein.

Claims (48)

1 . An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame structure;

a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure;

at least one electric motor supported by the frame structure; and

a brake system coupled to each one of the plurality of wheels,

wherein:

each brake system includes a disc, a first braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels, and a second braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels that is circumferentially spaced from the first braking device around the disc,

the first braking device includes a first housing that surrounds an open cavity extending axially all the way through the first housing, and

the second braking device includes a second housing devoid of an opening that extends axially all the way through the second housing.

2 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the open cavity is radially offset from a central rotational axis of the disc.

3 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the first housing is formed by two halves.

4 . The electric vehicle of claim 3 , wherein the open cavity extends axially all the way through each one of the two halves.

5 . The electric vehicle of claim 3 , wherein the second housing is formed by two halves.

6 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a first sensor coupled to the first housing to provide a signal indicative of degradation of one or more brake pads of the first braking device in use of the electric vehicle.

7 . The electric vehicle of claim 6 , further comprising a second sensor coupled to the second housing to provide a signal indicative of degradation of one or more brake pads of the second braking device in use of the electric vehicle.

8 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

the disc includes an outer annular surface that extends circumferentially to at least partially define an outer diameter of the disc, and

the first braking device is configured to contact an outer face of the disc without enclosing the outer annular surface.

9 . The electric vehicle of claim 8 , wherein the second braking device is configured to contact an outer face of the disc without enclosing the outer annular surface.

10 . The electric vehicle of claim 1 , wherein:

each brake system includes a third braking device configured to contact one or more teeth of the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels, and

the third braking device is circumferentially spaced from the second braking device and the first braking device around the disc.

11 . An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame structure;

a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure;

at least one electric motor supported by the frame structure; and

a brake system coupled to each one of the plurality of wheels,

wherein:

each brake system includes a disc, a first braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels, and a second braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels,

the disc includes an outer annular surface that extends circumferentially to at least partially define an outer diameter of the disc,

the first braking device is configured to contact an outer face of the disc without enclosing the outer annular surface, and

the second braking device is configured to contact an outer face of the disc without enclosing the outer annular surface.

12 . The electric vehicle of claim 11 , wherein the first braking device includes a first housing defining a unitary structure that surrounds an open cavity extending axially all the way through the first housing.

13 . The electric vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the open cavity is radially offset from a central rotational axis of the disc.

14 . The electric vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the second braking device includes a second housing devoid of an opening that extends axially all the way through the second housing.

15 . The electric vehicle of claim 11 , further comprising a first sensor coupled to the first braking device to provide a signal indicative of degradation of one or more brake pads of the first braking device in use of the electric vehicle.

16 . The electric vehicle of claim 15 , further comprising a second sensor coupled to the second braking device to provide a signal indicative of degradation of one or more brake pads of the second braking device in use of the electric vehicle.

17 . An electric vehicle comprising:

a frame structure;

a plurality of wheels supported by the frame structure;

at least one electric motor supported by the frame structure; and

a brake system coupled to each one of the plurality of wheels,

wherein:

each brake system includes a disc, a first braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels, and a second braking device to contact the disc to resist rotation of one of the plurality of wheels that is circumferentially spaced from the first braking device around the disc, and

a pair of fluid connectors are arranged radially inward of an inner diameter of the disc and circumferentially between the first braking device and the second braking device around the disc.

18 . The electric vehicle of claim 17 , wherein a low-voltage cable connector is arranged radially inward of the inner diameter of the disc and circumferentially between the pair of fluid connectors and the second braking device around the disc.

19 . The electric vehicle of claim 17 , wherein the first braking device includes a first housing that surrounds an open cavity extending axially all the way through the first housing.

20 . The electric vehicle of claim 19 , wherein the open cavity is radially offset from a central rotational axis of the disc.
