Abstract

A finger-worn wearable ring device may include a ring-shaped housing, a printed circuit board, and a sensor module that includes one or more light-emitting components and one or more light-receiving components. The wearable ring device may further include a communication module configured to wirelessly communicate with an application executable on a user device.

Claims (33)

1 . A finger-worn wearable ring device, comprising:

a housing having an inner curved surface and an outer curved surface, the inner curved surface configured to at least partially contact a tissue of a user when the finger-worn wearable ring device is worn by the user, and the outer curved surface at least partially exposed to a surrounding environment of the user;

a rechargeable battery disposed at least partially within the housing;

one or more sensors electrically coupled with the rechargeable battery, the one or more sensors configured to acquire data from the user to monitor at least one of physical activity, sleep, or health of the user; and

one or more photovoltaic cells electrically coupled with the rechargeable battery, the one or more photovoltaic cells configured to generate a current used to recharge the rechargeable battery based, at least in part, on light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells through or incident on the outer curved surface of the housing.

2 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells comprise at least a first photovoltaic cell and a second photovoltaic cell that are connected in series.

3 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells comprise at least a first photovoltaic cell and a second photovoltaic cell, the first photovoltaic cell arranged at a first position within or beneath the outer curved surface of the housing, and the second photovoltaic cell arranged at a second position within or beneath the outer curved surface of the housing.

4 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 3 , further comprising:

a first window disposed within the outer curved surface at the first position associated with the first photovoltaic cell, and a second window disposed within the outer curved surface at the second position associated with the second photovoltaic cell.

5 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , further comprising:

one or more optical elements extending from the housing of the finger-worn wearable ring device, wherein the one or more optical elements are configured to focus, concentrate, or magnify the light through or incident on the housing to the one or more photovoltaic cells.

6 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , wherein the one or more optical elements comprise one or more domes or faceted protrusions.

7 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , wherein the one or more optical elements comprise one or more gemstones.

8 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , wherein the one or more optical elements comprise a glass material, a quartz material, a zirconium material, or any combination thereof.

9 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , further comprising:

one or more windows disposed within the outer curved surface of the housing, wherein the one or more windows enable the light to pass through the housing to the one or more photovoltaic cells, and wherein the one or more optical elements are configured to collect the light from a field that is wider than the one or more windows.

10 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , wherein a focal length of the one or more optical elements is different from a distance between the one or more optical elements and the one or more photovoltaic cells such that a focal point of the one or more optical elements is not located on a surface of the one or more photovoltaic cells.

11 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 5 , further comprising:

an attachment frame configured to attach the finger-worn wearable ring device such that the attachment frame extends from the outer curved surface of the housing, wherein the attachment frame is configured to secure the one or more optical elements to the finger-worn wearable ring device.

12 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 11 , wherein the attachment frame is detachable from the finger-worn wearable ring device, wherein the one or more optical elements are detachable from the attachment frame, or both.

13 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the housing comprises a substantially transparent material, wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells are configured to receive the light through the substantially transparent material.

14 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells comprise one or more concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) cells.

15 . The finger-worn wearable ring device of claim 1 , wherein the rechargeable battery comprises a curved battery that is configured to fit within a curved portion of the finger-worn wearable ring device.

16 . A wearable device, comprising:

a housing having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface configured to at least partially contact a tissue of a user when the wearable device is worn by the user, and the outer surface at least partially exposed to a surrounding environment of the user;

a rechargeable battery disposed at least partially within the housing;

one or more sensors electrically coupled with the rechargeable battery, the one or more sensors configured to acquire data from the user to monitor at least one of physical activity, sleep, or health of the user; and

one or more photovoltaic cells electrically coupled with the rechargeable battery, the one or more photovoltaic cells configured to generate a current used to recharge the rechargeable battery based, at least in part, on light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells through or incident on the outer surface of the housing.

17 . The wearable device of claim 16 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells comprise at least a first photovoltaic cell and a second photovoltaic cell that are connected in series.

18 . The wearable device of claim 16 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells comprise at least a first photovoltaic cell and a second photovoltaic cell, the first photovoltaic cell arranged at a first position within or beneath the outer surface of the housing, and the second photovoltaic cell arranged at a second position within or beneath the outer surface of the housing.

19 . The wearable device of claim 16 , further comprising:

one or more optical elements extending from the outer surface of the housing of the wearable device, wherein the one or more optical elements are configured to focus, concentrate, or magnify the light through or incident on the housing to the one or more photovoltaic cells.

20 . The wearable device of claim 16 , wherein the wearable device comprises a wrist-worn device.
