Abstract

A portable cooler container includes a container body with a payload chamber. The container body has an insulated vessel and a temperature control system that cools the payload chamber.

Claims (65)

1. A portable cooler container system, comprising:

a container body having a payload chamber, the container body comprising:

a phase change material disposed about at least a portion of the payload chamber;

a conduit disposed between the payload chamber and an outer surface of the container body and extending within the phase change material, an outer surface of the conduit being in thermal communication with at least a portion of the payload chamber; and

a temperature control system disposed between the outer surface of the container body and the payload chamber, the temperature control system comprising:

a cold side heat sink in thermal communication with at least a portion of the conduit;

a hot side heat sink;

a thermoelectric module interposed between and in thermal communication with the cold side heat sink and the hot side heat sink, wherein the conduit is configured to flow heat from the payload chamber to the cold side heat sink to cool at least a portion of the payload chamber; and

circuitry configured to control an operation of the thermoelectric module; and

a lid operable to access the payload chamber.

2. The portable cooler container system of claim 1 , wherein the conduit extends along a coiled path.

The portable cooler container system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to sense one or more parameters of the payload chamber or temperature control system and to communicate the sensed one or more parameters to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed one or more parameters.

The portable cooler container system of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the one or more sensors is a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature in the payload chamber and to communicate the sensed temperature to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed temperature.

5. The portable cooler container system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more fins extending from the outer surface of the conduit.

6. The portable cooler container system of claim 1 , further comprising:

one or more air intake openings in the container body,

one or more air exhaust openings in the container body,

one or more channels in fluid communication with the one or more air intake openings and one or more exhaust openings, and

one or more fans operable to draw air from outside the container body into the one or more channels,

wherein the cold side heat sink transfers the heat from the payload chamber to the hot side heat sink via the thermoelectric module, and wherein the one or more fans are operable to flow the air past the hot side heat sink to remove heat from the hot side heat sink and flow the air out of the container body via the one or more air exhaust openings, the circuitry being further configured to control the operation of the one or more fans.

7. A portable cooler container system, comprising:

a container body having a payload chamber, the container body comprising:

one or more sleeve portions disposed external to and about at least a portion of the payload chamber;

a phase change material disposed in the one or more sleeve portions; and

a conduit extending within the one or more sleeve portions, an outer surface of the conduit in thermal communication with at least a portion of the payload chamber;

a temperature control system, the temperature control system comprising:

a cold side heat sink in thermal communication with at least a portion of the conduit,

a hot side heat sink;

a thermoelectric module interposed between and in thermal communication with the cold side heat sink and the hot side heat sink,

wherein the conduit is configured to flow heat from the payload chamber to the cold side heat sink to cool at least a portion of the payload chamber; and

circuitry configured to control an operation of the thermoelectric module; and

a lid operable to access the payload chamber.

8. The portable cooler container system of claim 7 , wherein the conduit extends along a coiled path.

The portable cooler container system of claim 7 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to sense one or more parameters of the payload chamber or the temperature control system and to communicate the sensed one or more parameters to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed one or more parameters.

The portable cooler container system of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the one or more sensors is a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature in the payload chamber and to communicate the sensed temperature to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed temperature.

11. The portable cooler container system of claim 7 , further comprising one or more fins extending from the outer surface of the conduit.

12. The portable cooler container system of claim 7 , further comprising thermally insulative material disposed between the payload chamber and an outer surface of the container body.

13. The portable cooler container system of claim 7 , further comprising:

one or more air intake openings in the container body,

one or more air exhaust openings in the container body,

one or more channels in fluid communication with the one or more air intake openings and one or more exhaust openings, and

one or more fans operable to draw air from outside the container body into the one or more channels,

wherein the cold side heat sink transfers the heat from the payload chamber to the hot side heat sink via the thermoelectric module, and wherein the one or more fans are operable to flow the air past the hot side heat sink to remove heat from the hot side heat sink and flow the air out of the container body via the one or more air exhaust openings, the circuitry being further configured to control the operation of the one or more fans.

14. A portable cooler container system, comprising:

a container body having a payload chamber, the container body comprising:

one or more sleeve portions disposed external to and about at least a portion of the payload chamber, the one or more sleeve portions configured to hold a phase change material;

a conduit extending within the one or more sleeve portions, wherein an outer surface of the conduit is in thermal communication with at least a portion of the payload chamber; and

a temperature control system disposed between an outer surface of the container body and the payload chamber, the temperature control system comprising:

a cold side heat sink in thermal communication with at least a portion of the conduit;

a hot side heat sink;

a thermoelectric module interposed between and in thermal communication with the cold side heat sink and hot side heat sink,

wherein the conduit configured to flow heat from the payload chamber to the cold side heat sink to cool at least a portion of the payload chamber; and

circuitry configured to control an operation of the thermoelectric module; and

a lid operable to access the payload chamber.

15. The portable cooler container system of claim 14 , wherein the conduit extends along a coiled path.

The portable cooler container system of claim 14 , further comprising one or more sensors configured to sense one or more parameters of the payload chamber or the temperature control system and to communicate the sensed one or more parameters to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed one or more parameters.

The portable cooler container system of claim 16 , wherein at least one of the one or more sensors is a temperature sensor configured to sense a temperature in the payload chamber and to communicate the sensed temperature to the circuitry, the circuitry being further configured to operate the thermoelectric module based at least in part on the sensed temperature.

18. The portable cooler container system of claim 14 , further comprising one or more fins extending from the outer surface of the conduit.

19. The portable cooler container system of claim 14 , further comprising thermally insulative material disposed between the payload chamber and the outer surface of the container body.

20. The portable cooler container system of claim 14 , further comprising:

one or more air intake openings in the container body,

one or more air exhaust openings in the container body,

one or more channels in fluid communication with the one or more air intake openings and one or more exhaust openings, and

one or more fans operable to draw air from outside the container body into the one or more channels,

wherein the cold side heat sink transfers the heat from the payload chamber to the hot side heat sink via the thermoelectric module, and wherein the one or more fans are operable to flow the air past the hot side heat sink to remove heat from the hot side heat sink and flow the air out of the container body via the one or more air exhaust openings, the circuitry being further configured to control the operation of the one or more fans.
