Combination Method For Treating Or Preventing Childhood Atopic Disease
The present application describes methods of treating or reducing the onset or occurrence of childhood atopic disease. In particular, it relates to an integrated solution that accounts for temporal and sequential administrations of three different and specific approaches for optimal effectiveness in treating or reducing the onset or occurrence of childhood atopic disease.
1 . A method of treating an infant identified at high risk for atopic dermatitis, comprising:
once-daily oral administration of a composition comprising about 5 to about 15 billion CFU of B. infantis for at least 12 weeks; and
daily skin treatment with a ceramide-rich emollient for at least 8 weeks, wherein the daily skin treatment is started within about 4 days of birth;
wherein the method is clinically associated with a statistically significant reduction in the cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis at 12 months or at 52 weeks.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition comprises about 8 billion CFU of B. infantis.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the B. infantis composition is administered as a mixture with breast milk.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the B. infantis composition is administered as a mixture with infant formula.
5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising administering to the infant between 1 and 6 allergenic foods, from three months of age.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the allergenic foods are cow milk, egg, peanut, wheat, soy, sesame, fish, shellfish, or tree nut.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is clinically associated with a 50% reduction in the risk of the cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis at 6 months.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is clinically associated with a 29% reduction in the risk of the cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis at 12 months.
9 . A kit, comprising:
a composition comprising about 5 to about 15 billion CFU of B. infantis; and
a ceramide-rich emollient.
10 . A method of treating a population of infants identified at high risk for atopic dermatitis, comprising:
once-daily administration to the population of infants of a composition comprising about 5 to about 15 billion CFU of B. infantis for at least 12 weeks; and
daily skin treatment of the population of infants with a ceramide-rich emollient for at least 8 weeks, wherein the daily skin treatment is started within about 4 days of birth;
wherein the treated population of infants demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in the cumulative incidence of atopic dermatitis at 12 months or at 52 weeks, as compared to a control population of infants.
