Abstract

A golf ball is disclosed herein that has at least one modified aerodynamic characteristic or performance trait. More specifically, the golf ball disclosed herein can include a dimple pattern having a specific drag coefficient and/or specific integrated drag area.

Claims (67)

1 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces and a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, the core having a weight of at least 1.245 ounces and a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.785, and

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ), a lift coefficient (C L ), and an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

where C D (Re) is established at a launch condition of a golf ball speed of 182.0 mph, a launch angle of 10.0 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,700 rpm, such that 14,500≤DA≤15,500; and

wherein C L ≥0.115 at a Reynolds number of 240,000 and a spin ratio of 0.060.

2 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient at a Reynolds number of 225,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.400≤C D /C L .

3 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient at a Reynolds number of 225,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: C D /C L <2.000.

4 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 220-270 dimples, with a surface coverage of 77.0%-83.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0425 in 3 -0.0575 in 3 .

5 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 340-390 dimples, with a surface coverage of 80.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0380 in 3 -0.0425 in 3 .

6 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 280-420 dimples, with a surface coverage of 70.0%-81.0%, and has a maximum dimple diameter disparity that is at least 0.040 inches.

7 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 270-320 dimples, with a surface coverage of 76.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0350 in 3 -0.0440 in 3 .

8 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 490-620 dimples, with a surface coverage of 79.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0175 in 3 -0.0375 in 3 .

9 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 390-490 dimples, with a surface coverage of 77.0%-86.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0225 in 3 -0.0450 in 3 .

10 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a compression of at least 80.

11 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.800.

12 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has an initial velocity of at least 250 feet/second.

13 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is comprised of at least three layers including a core, a casing layer, and a cover, and wherein the cover is comprised of urethane.

14 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball is comprised of four layers including a dual layer core, a casing layer, and a cover, and wherein the cover is comprised of urethane.

15 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein C L ≤0.200 at a Reynolds number of 185,000 and a spin ratio of 0.105.

16 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.260 ounces, and the core has a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.790.

17 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a weight of at least 1.280 ounces, and the core has a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.795.

18 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of at least 1.525 inches.

19 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core has a diameter of at least 1.545 inches.

20 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 14,750≤DA≤15,500.

21 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 15,000≤DA≤15,500.

22 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 14,500≤DA≤15,250.

23 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 14,500≤DA≤15,000.

24 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces, a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.800, an initial velocity of at least 250 feet/second, and a compression of at least 80;

the core has a weight of at least 1.245 ounces, a coefficient of restitution of at least 0.790, and a diameter of at least 1.525 inches;

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ), a lift coefficient (C L ), and an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:
