Abstract

Systems and methods are adapted for treating the carotid artery. The systems include interventional catheters and blood vessel access devices that are adapted for transcervical insertion into the carotid artery. Embodiments of the systems and methods can be used in combination with embolic protection systems including blood flow reversal mechanisms, arterial filters, and arterial occlusion devices.

11 . A system for treating a cerebral artery, comprising:

an arterial access catheter configured to be disposed adjacent to or within a cerebral artery, the arterial access catheter having a proximal end region;

a venous return catheter configured to receive blood from the arterial access catheter and return the blood to a vein; and

an interventional catheter configured to be passed through the arterial access catheter and into the cerebral artery.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a balloon catheter.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a stent delivery device.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a self-expanding stent.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a balloon-expandable stent.

16 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising a shunt coupled to the arterial access catheter, the shunt being configured to direct flow from the arterial access catheter to the venous return catheter.

17 . The system of claim 11 , further comprising a flow control assembly disposed between the arterial access catheter and the venous return catheter.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the flow control assembly includes a first fluid pathway and a second fluid pathway.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the flow control assembly includes an inflatable bladder.

20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the flow control assembly includes a fluid pathway configured to shift between a first flow state and a second flow state where less fluid flows than in the first flow state.

21 . A system for treating a cerebral blood vessel, comprising:

an access catheter configured to be disposed adjacent to or within a cerebral blood vessel, the access catheter having a proximal end region;

a return catheter;

a shunt coupled to the proximal end region of the access catheter and to the return catheter;

a flow control assembly coupled to the shunt, the flow control assembly being configured to regulate flow between the access catheter and the return catheter; and

an interventional catheter configured to be passed through the access catheter and into the cerebral blood vessel.

22 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a balloon catheter.

23 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a stent delivery device.

24 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a self-expanding stent.

25 . The system of claim 21 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a balloon-expandable stent.

26 . A method for treating a cerebral blood vessel, the method comprising:

disposing an arterial access catheter adjacent to or within a cerebral artery;

disposing a venous return catheter in a vein;

coupling a shunt coupled to the arterial access catheter and to the venous return catheter;

wherein a flow control assembly is coupled to the shunt, the flow control assembly being configured to regulate flow between the arterial access catheter and the venous return catheter;

advancing an interventional catheter through the arterial access catheter and into the cerebral artery; and

treating the cerebral artery with the interventional catheter.

27 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a balloon and wherein treating the cerebral artery with the interventional catheter includes expanding the balloon.

28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein the interventional catheter includes a stent delivery device and wherein treating the cerebral artery with the interventional catheter includes delivering a stent to the cerebral artery.

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the stent comprises a self-expanding stent.

30 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the stent comprises a balloon-expandable stent.
