Abstract

Disclosed are devices, systems and methods for securing wireless communications between a remote monitor center and a vehicle by using redundancy measures to increase the robustness of the system. In some embodiments, a system may include redundant communication channels, deploy redundant hardware and software stacks to enable switching to a backup in an emergency situation, and employ hypervisors at both the remote monitor center and the vehicle to monitor hardware and software resources and perform integrity checks. In other embodiments, message digests based on a cryptographic hash function and a plurality of predetermined commands are generated at both the remote monitor center and the vehicle, and compared to ensure the continuing integrity of the wireless communication system.

Claims (30)

1 . A method for providing security for a vehicular monitoring system, comprising:

periodically performing an integrity check on a software stack associated with control or operation of a vehicle; and

replacing the software stack with a new version of the software stack from a backup software system at least when a failure of the integrity check is determined.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

triggering an emergency handling service at least when tampering of the new version of the software stack is detected.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the integrity check comprises determining whether a position, velocity or acceleration of a vehicle is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the integrity check comprises determining whether data from one or more sensors is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

identifying at least one of the one or more sensors whose data is not within the pre-determined acceptable operating range; and

ceasing to use the at least one of the one or more sensors.

6 . An apparatus comprising a processor that when configured causes the apparatus to:

periodically perform an integrity check on a software stack associated with control or operation of a vehicle; and

replace the software stack with a new version of the software stack from a backup software system at least when a failure of the integrity check is determined.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause the apparatus to:

trigger an emergency handling service at least when tampering of the new version of the software stack is detected.

8 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the integrity check comprises a determination of whether a position, velocity or acceleration of a vehicle is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

9 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the integrity check comprises a determination of whether data from one or more sensors is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

10 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the processor is further configured to cause the apparatus to:

identify at least one of the one or more sensors whose data is not within the pre-determined acceptable operating range; and

cease to use the at least one of the one or more sensors.

11 . A non-transitory computer readable program storage medium having code stored thereon, the code, when executed by a processor, causing an apparatus to implement a method, comprising:

periodically performing an integrity check on a software stack associated with control or operation of a vehicle; and

replacing the software stack with a new version of the software stack from a backup software system at least when a failure of the integrity check is determined.

12 . The non-transitory computer readable program storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises:

triggering an emergency handling service at least when tampering of the new version of the software stack is detected.

13 . The non-transitory computer readable program storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the integrity check comprises determining whether a position, velocity or acceleration of a vehicle is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable program storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the integrity check comprises determining whether data from one or more sensors is within a pre-determined acceptable operating range.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable program storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the method further comprises:

identifying at least one of the one or more sensors whose data is not within the pre-determined acceptable operating range; and

ceasing to use the at least one of the one or more sensors.
