Magnetic adhesive for use on skin
The present disclosure relates generally to an adhesive that can be used on organic tissue such as human skin, tapes including the adhesive with a magnetic filler such as a ferromagnetic filler, and methods of making the tapes.
1 . A method of providing a bio-compatible magnetic adhesive tape, the method comprising:
providing 5-50% of a base pressure sensitive adhesive and 50-95% of a magnetic filler;
combining the base pressure sensitive adhesive and the magnetic filler to form a magnetic adhesive composition, wherein the magnetic adhesive composition magnetizing the magnetic filler, measures about 0 lb/in adhesion to steel and/or polypropylene as tested according to the ASTM D3330/D3330M-04 “Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape”, about 0 minutes static shear as tested according to PSTC-107 Procedure A, and about 0 gram probe tack as tested according to ASTM D2979-01 “Standard Test Method for Pressure-Sensitive Tack of Adhesives Using Inverted Probe Method”; and wherein the adhesive composition passed ISO 10993-5 biocompatibility test;
coating a substrate with the magnetic adhesive composition to provide a magnetic adhesive tape.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic filler is magnetized by an instrument used to coat the substrate with the magnetic adhesive composition.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the instrument is at least one steel roller.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic filler is strontium ferrite.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the magnetic filler is strontium ferrite in powdered form.
6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the powdered strontium ferrite is a powder with average particle size between about 1.65 microns to about 4.6 microns.
7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising adhering the magnetic adhesive tape to skin of a user.
8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising mixing the magnetic filler with a solvent to wet the magnetic filler before the step of combining the base pressure sensitive adhesive and the magnetic filler.
9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising drying the magnetic adhesive composition on the substrate after the step of coating the substrate with the magnetic adhesive composition.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of drying includes drying the magnetic adhesive composition on the substrate for a first predetermined time period at room temperature and then drying the magnetic adhesive composition on the substrate for a second predetermined time period at a temperature greater than room temperature.
11 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising covering the magnetic adhesive tape with a paper release liner.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of magnetizing the magnetic filler occurs during the coating step while the magnetic adhesive composition is wet.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of magnetizing the magnetic filler occurs after the coating step while the magnetic adhesive composition is dry.
14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the base pressure sensitive adhesive is polyacrylate, rubber based, polyurethane, epoxy, or silicone, or a mixture thereof.
15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is at least one of nonwoven cloth and PET film.
16 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising mixing rheological additives with the magnetic adhesive composition to reduce sedimentation of the magnetic filler from the base pressure sensitive adhesive.
17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of coating includes coating the substrate with the magnetic adhesive composition such that the magnetic adhesive composition has a thickness of about 0.3 mils to about 7 mils.
