Abstract

A gate driver includes a variable strength driver circuit that provides an output signal to drive a high power device. The gate driver receives an update request from a host controller during an operating mode in which switching operations occur and updates one or more operating parameters associated with driving the high power device. The operating parameters including turn-on parameters, turn-off parameters, and soft shutdown parameters. The variable strength driver circuit uses the turn-on parameters for turn-on phases for the output signal, uses the turn-off parameters for turn-off phases for the output signal, and uses the soft shutdown parameters for soft shutdown phases for the output signal. The update request adjusts current, voltage, and/or time for one or more phases of the turn-on, turn-off and/or soft shutdown parameters.

The method of claim 2 further comprising synchronizing the update of the one or more turn-on parameters with a switching state of the gate driver, the synchronizing providing that changes to any of the one or more turn-on parameters occur responsive to the switching state of the gate driver changing from an on-state to an off-state.

9 . A method of operating a gate driver, the method comprising:

while a gate driver is in an operating mode in which the gate driver causes a drive device to perform switching operations, and responsive to first data received from a controller, writing to at least one first register that is writable when the gate driver is in the operating mode, the writing to the at least one first register resulting in updating one or more turn-on parameters associated with an output signal that is provided by the gate driver to control the drive device;

while the gate driver is not in the operating mode, responsive to second data received from the controller, writing to at least one second register that is not writable when the gate driver is in the operating mode; and

during one or more turn-on phases of the output signal, using the updated one or more turn-on parameters to generate the output signal.

10 . The method of claim 9 further comprising:

calculating, while the gate driver is in the operating mode, a first cyclic redundancy check value based on contents of the at least one first register; and

comparing the first cyclic redundancy check value to a second cyclic redundancy check value to determine if the at least one first register has an error.
